Definitive Audiophile pressings

I'm going to start streaming some of these, much like Coltrane, I love his work, but I could never get into Ascension and I feel in Jazz there are a lot of those more acclaimed, yet experimental albums that might fall short for an above average fan :)
Ascension was a landmark album, a milestone of free jazz. Nobody listened to it then, and nobody does now. It is great for clearing out guests that have overstayed their welcome though.

When I was debating the VMP Herbie box I played The Piano for the first time and loved it. I still stream it at least once a week so may be worth a look. Also love the Trio album that Get Down released at the last RSD and I'm sure there are tons of copies kicking about.
For titles that originally came out in Japan, buy the vintage Japanese pressing. Always the best sounding. Not the Get Down stuff.

It's a bit far to travel for a Herbie Hancock record when my local had one for 15 quid though. Not that I'm adverse to travelling to Japan under normal circumstances. Love the place!

Maiden Voyage is a warhorse I suppose, but essential. So is Speak Like A Child - I have a fabulous sounding Toshiba pressing.

Empyrean Isles is good, but not one I turn to often. A bit out.

The AP Headhunters is great. 33 is the way to go. BUT - there are better from this period. Flood, on Speakers Corner, is amazing. So is Man-Child.

Taking Off,with Dexter Gordon, I would get before Empyrean, and the BN80 is great.

So many others. There are several Herbie albums done in Japan that are readily avialable and very good.
Sextant is also worth checking out. I don't think there have been any audiophile reissues. The originals are affordable though.

At the moment Headhunters, Empyrean Isles, and Sextant are probably my favorites, but there are a lot of great ones and I'm sure that'll change eventually. Looking forward to getting the BN Classic Maiden Voyage.

..........does this mean I need to start hanging out in the Jazz forum more so I don't miss this stuff, lol

As far as I know they are identical beyond the numbering. But yes that's the ones. Spectacular sound BUT... mono. I personally prefer stereo in general because mono doesn't have the wide staging that I enjoy from stereo. Pretty much all the music on this one is coming from between my speakers as a result. If possible I'd rather stereo for the wider soundstage, but man it sounds good nonetheless. I currently have the MOV 2 LP and this kills it (no great surprise there).

I have the MOV stereo & the Mono. I love the mono version, I went on a buying spree & bought 8 of the 9 Miles mono's available & tbh all of them are an absolute bargain.

I'm not sure that I should ask the question, but would the Herbie Anthology be worth it? I've talked myself out of all the anthologies, but looking back I probably would have liked quite a few of them.

Can you make it to your post office?

Personally, I don't think so. Especially with a few of the albums being pressed at GZ now with all the issues they have had.

Unless you really like later Herbie (1979 and beyond) you're better off using that money to buy his audiophile releases of his albums one by one . There are a lot out there and I think it's cheaper than getting the anthology even:

Takin' Off (BN80)
My Point Of View (Tone Poet)
Inventions & Dimensions (BN80)
Maiden Voyage (BN Classic - Coming soon)
The Prisoner (Tone Poet)
Crossings (Speakers Corner)
Head Hunters (Analogue Productions)
Man-Child (Speakers Corner)
Flood (Speakers Corner)
Mr. Hands (Vinyl Me Please

Those are all AAA
