I cannot seem to get into current hip hop. I’m a Tribe, De La and J5 man. Any recommendations based on those I should look up?!

Off the top of my head I think it'd be worth checking out Saba - Bucket List Project & Isiah Rashad - Cilvia Demo, cause I feel like they're two projects which are a great marriage of melodic & lyrical sensibilities in a way that the artists you mentioned also are

EDIT: A good question is also probably what do you like about those artists and what puts you off about "current hip hop"? Cause at the moment we're definitely in one of the most creative periods in rap history imo, whether you're a Westside Gunn, Playboi Carti, or Milo fan, I think there's something out there for everyone these days

Your Old Droog!!!!!!!!! I just pre-ordered this album to go with his self titled and Kenison that I have.....I wanna say this is my favorite album yet, but man it's hard to top that self-titled debut of his.

Cheers - I’ll check them out! In terms of being put off by current hip-hop I’d say I feel that there is too much lyrical laziness. I seem to here only commercial hip-hop here on the UK stations and it’s too samey. Obviously there is a lot more variety that I’m probably being sheltered from by my radio choices and what I listen to on Apple Music.

I like older hip-hop as it’s funky, and I like a story in my lyrics also, or some quirkiness. Slick Rick - Children’s story for example. I also don’t like it to be too aggressive!!

How did you feel about Comfort Zone....Saba's mixtape from like 2015. I want it on vinyl so bad!!!!!!!!! Burnout, Butter, 401k, Scum, Weside Bound 1 and 2. Ahhhhhh throwing it on now lmao

This album has the only song I’ve ever heard with Wiki on it that I think someone outshined him. Ugly Mane went off... wish the orange wasn’t so pricey.

I would definitely recommend Joey Bada$$ - 1999. Should be right up your alley in terms of bridging the gap from classic boom bap to modern day hip hop. I would say Kendrick Lamar - Section .80 is required listening for 2010s hip hop and might not be exactly like the groups you mentioned but a dude who takes the craft very seriously, has good content and musical sensibility. Run the Jewels could work? Check em out on youtube and see if any songs click. Lastly I would say Roc Marciano - Rosebudd's revenge if you like the idea of a super slick pimp rapper from NY draped in fine silks eating $70 quail dishes who produces his own stuff and uses cool samples from old movies and records to give a kind of noir feeling to the music. Crazy bars too

I’ll definitely check them out. I’m aware of RTJ and I like a couple of their tracks so I’ll try and travel through a few more.

I loved it, was what put me on to him and a soundtrack to a tricky time in my life. I wouldn't consider myself a stan of anyone but Saba might just be the exception to that rule haha

Also I would strongly recommend you stick around this thread and see what people post every now and then, you're sure to come across some stuff that you enjoy, even if it's something that may not have seemed your thing on paper, hip hop fans of all taste are welcome here!
