Vinyl Me Please Classics

OMG! This is absolutely amazing! This month is definitely VMP's strongest month this year, and I think possibly their strongest month ever!
👏👏👏🎯🏆
What im most impressed with is that it would be hard for anyone NOT to consider each of this months picks an Essential/Classic/R&HH pick.

Freedom Suite is a politically charged album that really sees Rollins make a stand (VMP have had a good history at times with picks like this - Attica Blues springs to mind).

Although its not my cup of tea, Spiritualized has clearly been anticipated for a long time and just reading the comments on this forum it becomes obvious that its a stand-out album of its genre.

Ghostface has clearly been an influential musician in the R&HH genres, and from what I understand (and looking at all the top reviews) its one of his best albums.

They've done well this month.

Get this Ghostface Killah ROTM Selaws! Trust me, it's an absolute gem, that has incredible production from MF DOOM, Pete Rock & J Dilla! I know you got a little bit put off by the Rap & Hip-Hop ROTM after receiving the underwhelming Future 'Honest' ROTM (When I saw that record in the What's Spinning thread, I literally was like, 'why did Selaws get this? I know he's going in blind because he's open minded, but poor thing, aint no way he would enjoy that record'). Fishscale by Ghostface Killah has incredible cinematic, electric, musically exciting production, and Ghostface Killah's confident novelty raps on street life are marvellous! 🎯🎬🥇

You honestly can't miss this one out Selaws! Trust me on this one, you will be blown away! 💯

Yeah thats exactly what happened with Honest. It was really the nail in the coffin when it comes to me and R&HH. Your recommendations are always fantastic @NathanRicaud so I will stream Fishscale and see what I think.

Enjoy the album! 'The Champ' is my favourite track! It's a semi-aggressive, energetic, thrilling jazzy braggadocio cut that's got a victory/winning sound to it! Like a KTO, triumphant, conquering feel! The striking, bright horns, squealing guitar riffs, and propulsive drums on the 'The Champ' is seriously A+ production! I've never heard a song so hungry and exciting, it sounds like a monster that's on a winning streak! 🏆

PS - Love your recommendations too! I still have the biggest crush on you and your music taste! 🔥🔥🔥

I love your Instagram so much and just you as a person on here! 😊

So just being devil's advocate here but why is the Sonny Rollins album such a good pick when there are tons available on discogs for under $20?

Any indication this is better than those for $33?

This is a brand new AAA reissue in a nice tip-on jacket. Probably will sound as good as it ever has sounded. The ones that go for cheap on discogs are probably the newer OJC reissues that were cut from a digital source. You could probably find a decent conditioned OJC copy from the 80s for a reasonable price that is AAA and sounds really good, but I think a reissue is still warranted. 1983 is a long time between quality AAA reissues.

You mean the reissues? Originals seem scarce and expensive. Not sure there are any great reissues of it at a glance. The OJC probably isn't bad. Not sure it would be as good as this has potential to be though.

Edit: oh I didn't see that 1983 OJC one. It is probably worth a shot if $20 sounds better price wise if you're cool with dealing with used. This one shouldn't be worse, but sometimes fresher tapes make a difference.

I'm going to bed now, but I remember listening to this album last year and I loved it. I need to listen to it again, and when I do, I'll explain to you why I think its worth USD$33! For now, we know this release will be AAA, 180g pressed at QRP and will sound superb!

But yeah, if no one explains, I'll be more than happy to give you my thoughts on the album! I whole heartedly believe this pressing will be the best sound pressing of that album yet, as there are no AP, Speakers Corner, MoFi etc pressings of this release! As it's not a Blue Note release, this Sonny Rollins album won't be getting a Tone Poet reissue obviously. Tone Poet's reissues right now all sound superb, just like the recent VMP Classics ROTM's!

There’s one for 12 plus shipping on merchbar, I think I’m just going to grab it because I don’t think the VMP one will sound 20 dollars better

Ok fair enough. Really had no idea. Now I need to listen to it. Thanks.

That would be the 2014 OJC which is digital and flat sounding. I definitely think getting the VMP version would be worth the upgrade in quality. Acoustic jazz in particular is one genre I really think needs to be listened to in high quality analog on vinyl. You're cutting yourself short of the performances otherwise IMO.

Okay you sold me , I’ll pass on the bargain bin version for a more quality release unless there is something amazing in swaps. I’m in for all 3 this month .

Fantastic pick and yeah no idea how the clues fit. I’ve been meaning to get the OJC issue of this but I might just have to splurge this month and get Spiritualized and Fishscale. Side note, go for the early to mid 80’s George Horn cuts. I think most if not all are AAA and sound great. When is announcement by the way?
