Vinyl Me Please Classics

Didn't he say in the write-up for this month that the reason they did it was because someone involved with it or the label was talking about how it is underrated?

Him saying stuff like that is why I feel like he has this weird thing where he prefers to do underrated albums by default. Like not that he necessarily prefers the underrated albums to the essentials, but that he loves telling people "this album is better than people think, you just didn't give it a chance!" Kinda like the Future write up as well, so I feel like he gravitates towards those picks. Maybe it is some sort of justification after the fact though and he has less control, like you say.

Edit:He also comes off to me as the kind of person who thinks every album in every artist he loves' catalogue is amazing and all the ones people don't like as much are underrated. Which is cool, but I don't have room in my collection or budget for too many of those titles at the moment, so I don't really want someone like that curating for me if they aren't curating essentials. As recommendation to check out, sure! But as a record they're trying to ship me as part of a subscription? It's usually gonna be a pass.
I think he’s justifying things after the fact or has talked himself into thinking those albums are essential. But maybe you’re right that he truly believes those underrated albums are still great and he’s doing the world a service by exposing everyone to it.

to me they would all be fine store exclusives. But I agree with your last point 100%. I don’t have room on my shelves to buy the Bar-Kay’s 5th best album for $27.

Hope we get some sort of left field album for the upcoming pick. Bar Kays is a letdown for me after Sahara. Also, if they are doing a jazz album again, they need to reissue Woody Shaw’s Blackstone Legacy. I’ve been on a Woody Shaw kick but I’ll never be able to afford a copy of that one.

This is something I remember him saying that I think about when I think he doesn't like ranking releases from artists he likes and separating the essentials:

That's great, I'm not trying to take anything away from people who enjoy it, but I think Jammed Together and Years Gone By would have been better long out of print picks and I don't think anyone would have complained if they did a high quality AAA of I'll Play The Blues For You or Live Wire/Blues Power even though they are available.

That's ignoring the obvious choice that is also out of print in a high quality mono version.

I think you would have a hard time finding Albert King fans who would list King's Things in their top 3 or even 5 essential records of his. I just thought it was a good example of Storf thinking "people don't ever talk about this King record, let's do it," instead of trying to pick an essential one.
That is an absolutely fair assessment, and I agree it's not his best work but I am still glad I have it in my collection.

Sounds like Storf alright! Haha. But that’s what I mean with the labels having more say. Most of them want to reissue the bigger titles on their own. Why only get a small cut of the revenue when they can get the whole thing? If Storf wants to reissue C and D list titles in someone’s catalogue they are more than happy to let them have that. I still think they blew their licensing budget for the year on Aretha and Otis and are since taking what they can get...

I am at least super happy to get those two titles, especially the mono Aretha Now. I had a very long running eBay search for that one!

2020 Classics Rankings for me (sound quality, pressing caliber, etc taken into accuount, not just music quality):

1-King, Does The King's Things
2-Aretha Now
3-The Immortal Otis Redding
4-Sahara
5-Magician
6-Mr. Hands
7-Straight From The Heart

And I dig Magician, and Mr. Hands a lot.

I would imagine a large majority of customers are on the 3 month or longer plan though. I like this classics pick, I love funk. I do like coldblooded slightly more so hoping I can swap to that in the future, however I am not disappointed in the money talks pick personally.
The cheapest NM you can get on discogs is $22+ shipping from Canada. The rest are in Europe.

Couldn't you swap for credit and then use the credit to buy Coldblooded, or do they only allow the credit to apply to membership fees?

That seems to be the overwhelming opinion on a lot of the classics releases lately though outside of Sahara. It’s not anything that people are super amped to get. If VMP didn’t reissue this one I doubt many people would be looking to buy it. Classics was an automatic buy from me every month for awhile. Now it seems they are running into a wall with good options to pick from and end up choosing deep catalogue cuts from bands without super deep catalogues of good stuff.
Im a sucker for Classics, but I do feel like they have slowed down on the 'big releases' compared to the beginning. I'm not familiar enough to pass comment with some of the genres (other than saying I have enjoyed all of them) but in terms of jazz to have Archie Shepp, Alice Coltrane, Stan Getz / Charlie Byrd, Max Roach, and Miles Davis/John Coltrane at the beginning was insanely strong, especially considering it was each of those artists biggest (or one of) albums to be picked. The McCoy pick has jumped it back up a level for me, but within the last jazz releases we had obscure ones from Herbie Hancock and Dave Brubeck (not that they weren't great, just not the same punchy level as the beginning)
Woody Shaw’s Blackstone Legacy.
Oh man thank you so much for reminding me of this. Ron Carter and Gary Bartz......yes please!

Yea--look at how the track started vs where it's at the past few months...it really was can't miss for a long time. There were very few I didn't feel the need to buy. I think I started caring less about them around the time of Willie Bobo and have skipped more than I have purchased since. There have only been 2 this year that I was excited about really.

TBF, I thought Patrice was a silly pick at the time. I scoffed at it. SCOFFED! But @NathanRicaud got me to actually give it a chance and now I love it. I swapped for it this month. So think there is something to be said for the "hey give these a chance" selections. After all, there are not that many Aretha Franklin level quality of artists out there. Maybe there aren't any...

Still haven’t received Sahara so I emailed CS this morning. Heard back within a few hours. This was their response:

“Thanks for reaching out.The Sahara record experienced some unexpected delays and is now shipping in August. I'm really sorry about the delay, as I know you were anticipating it arriving sooner. You'll receive an email once it officially ships.”

So it’s delayed until August? Even though other people already have been getting theirs? And they weren’t going to bother letting me know of course without me asking.

That’s outrageous. I not only received it two weeks ago but it had a defect and VMP shipped me a new copy two days ago. So should get the replacement tomorrow.

Maybe I’m in the minority but I’ve genuinely enjoyed almost every single release this year. Otis and Aretha were both incredible pressings. I’m a huge Herbie fan so I would have picked Mr. Hands up eventually anyways. I’m kind of a sucker for the sound of Straight From the Heart. And I thought both Magician and the Albert King records were a blast to listen to. Money Talks is the only disappointment this year for me.

Im with you in the sense that I have enjoyed every release this year, but most of the releases I went in blind. Not that this is a bad thing though as part of the reason I joined VMP all those years ago was to have my eyes (ears) opened to new music. I do think the first year was stronger though. I certainly look forward to Classics most each month compared to the other subs.

Yeah I actually like the going in blind aspect sometimes and love being exposed to new music.

I do think that if I had been around since the beginning I probably would be less enthusiastic than I am right now. Looking back at those early releases, I can acknowledge there has been a shift.

Bloody hell. My email from Pauly said "There was a slight delay with the remaining stock we had of that title, but we should be shipping your copy with your August shipment"

I interpreted that as "we found a new way to screw up but you will get your record someday. Thanks for the short term loan."
