It is common to refer to all types of ska as just "ska" and ska punk typically falls under third wave. I don't understand your issue with that or why you mentioned appropriating the name, when the reason the name is used, is because there is an influence of elements from the original ska genre, just like rock and blues to whatever you want to call subgenres of that today.

My point still stands about replying to a post about someone saying they like bands in a genre with "don't call it that, that's not ska, that's ska punk, which is terrible" to paraphrase.

If you want to actually explain what you think I'm misunderstanding instead of being condescending, that would be cool too, as sometimes its hard for me to understand everything perfectly.

That was literally the first time I had ever seen someone refer to ska-punk as just ska in my entire life, they’re so different musically, and I spent a lot of time around the edges of the genre through friends in the late 90s early 00s.

You spoke about musical appropriation aggressively, defensively at length in response to a post that was talking about nomenclature.

Happy that I'll have this John Mayer album and can't to spin the VMP David Gray exclusive, which is on the way to me! They're both a bit challenging listens for me personally but I genuinely do enjoy the music on them both for the most part! :D

I’m glad you’re getting some joy out of it. One aspect of curation is to expose people to styles and artists they might not have thought about liking. If this worked for you, awesome! I think what some commentators have an issue with is that they believe that VMP didn’t really think this is an album of great music that should have a wider vinyl release but was part of a business deal package or just targeted to already-fans of JM to get them to subscribe. As a business decision, that might be the way to go, I dunno, I don’t care. Anyway, to the extent this selection gives you something you like, I’m happy for you!
 
Listening to Mayer for the first time in my life. Just three songs in and this is not at all what I expected. Everybody was talking about the good guitar player he is and I expected something more... Rock, I guess. This is harmless background music to play while I'm having brunch with a friend. It's like Des'Ree for white dudes. I'm not sure I I'd pay for this music on vinyl, but if I get it as a present I'd be happy.

Sorry, I guess in trying to make sense of why you had a problem with the way that people who are fans of a genre refer to it, I misunderstood you. I'm sorry if you felt that was agressive, that was not my intent.

My intent was to encourage you to reconsider going out of your way to tell people they shouldn't refer to a genre they enjoy by the colloquial norm because you think that genre is terrible.

Fair enough. I think the genre can be fun but isn’t particularly good and there are big issues with acts within it but that wasn’t my point, I was being flippant, which I have an issue with, sorry if that confused things or rubbed you up the wrong way.

My point was about taking the full name of a different, prior, music form and whole scale attributing it to a later much different one.

The Bosstones are like the most generic ska band there is (kind of like the intro to the genre). They're not bad, but there were so many more interesting bands out there.

Disagree! I think they’re the link between American punk and two tone ska. They wrote good songs that were ska tinged, but without being slavish to the ska sound and the “pick it up! Pick it up! Pick it up!” silliness. They got shitty at the end when they got a hit, but their first four albums are great.

I will forever have a soft spot for Question the Answers. That is a fantastic album.

I listened to punk-ska basically every day for 4+ years. The Bosstones ain't shit (even if Dickey Barrett is a real chill guy)

I just gave it a listen through too. It’s fine. A nice enough background music while drinking a coffee and doing work on your laptop. Which is what I was doing. That Stars by Simply Red comparison holds up though. And I’m not slagging either album off with that. All things have their place.

For me, Operation Ivy, Rancid, Catch 22/Streetlight, ASOBs, Less Than Jake, and Mad Caddies made solid albums. There are some really corny ska bands and some really corny fans, but I've never really understood why it's broadly maligned as a genre.

I also really like The Slackers for non-punk 3rd-wave.

Bosstones and RBF never really did anything for me but were really popular with some of my friends.
