The Blue Note Thread

Could do, maybe Not ?
Is the AP 45?

The AP is 45. There has been some back-and-forth on the Hoffman MMJ reissue thread about the AP vs.SRX. In that hyper-specific, very small sample size, the posters there seem to prefer the AP reissues by about 3:1. Everyone there is quick to lament the packaging on the AP reissues, though.

Is that just Steve Hoffman worship though? He worked on that AP and not the MMJ if I’m not mistaken. I’m sure both sound fantastic though.

Went to Face Records in Brooklyn for the first time today. @Dark Star Boogie —you would probably blow your life savings in here haha. Almost entirely Japanese pressings of albums. HUGE jazz section with tons of King BNs, prestige reissues, Three Blind Mice originals, Japanese Jazz, etc. I was good though and only picked up this one:

Minor Revelation is one of my favorite Bennie tunes!! I even bought the 45 just for fun.

Haven't seen this cover before, very cool!

Honest question—does anyone think the new Mr. Jones Blue Note 80th Anniversary will sound better than an original? Because you can buy a VG+ original for around $10, not including shipping and tax, on Discogs. So I’m wondering if there’s any reason why I should not cancel that preorder.

I've been doing many direct comparisons between 'old' and 'new', and find that I like the older albums better. They do have more noise, but there is a crispness from the original that normally wins me over. There can be more noise for sure, and if this reaches a moderate level where it feels intrusive, I favor the newer release. I'm listening with headphones and doing A/B comparisons for a few various parts to compare. I don't have a crazy audiophile setup, so someone with a better setup may experience this differently, but find I'm leaning towards clean old copies over new.

Yeah I agree with this, if there's a super clean old copy, I'd prefer that. BUT, even a VG+ from cogs could end up noisy and frustrating. And you won't get the crisp, new jacket, if that matters to you. In most instances, I think I prefer the sound of an OG, but actually end up buying the reissues. The sound isn't that vastly different and I like having the nice, clean jackets. Although Japanese presses are the perfect middleground... nicely kept vinyl/jackets and really fantastic sound. Especially those Kings!

I love my originals but yeah even if they look clean, they probably have groove wear from heavy needles. They are usually very close to newer audiophile issues if they are clean though. Slightly more compressed and the soundstage isn’t as crisp and open. But they do have character. I have to imagine that these Tone Poets/MMJ/BN80 releases are the best we are going to get until new technology comes out. Hopefully we can preserve the existing tapes for generations to come.

Any key bn80’s I’m missing then please let me know and I’ll add them to the list. I also ordered the Buhaina’s Delight but for some reason that got cancelled and didn’t arrive.

I really like Jutta Hipp Jutta Hipp with Zoot Sims, Donald Byrd's Ethiopian Knights and Kenny Dorham's Una Mas. Grant's First Stand by Grant Green is also great as is Basra by Pete LaRoca.

Super - thanks! I’ll add them to the list and get them once the arrival of 10 records in one go has been ‘forgotten’ by the other half...

Great suggestions.

I also recommend looking into:
Freddie Hubbard - Open Sesame or Hub-Tones
Herbie Hancock - Inventions and Dimensions (I really enjoy this one; it’s different, you should stream it.)

Oh yeah, Basra is phenomenal.

Nope. These are the first jazz records I’ve purchased, bar The Comet is Coming and a few others. So it’s all pretty new to me! I’ve streamed a good chunk by I’m not in the know on TP etc. Again any recommendations greatly received!
Oh man, here it comes. Every one of those Tone Poet's are great. This crowd is so knowledgeable about everything except that I can't buy every freaking album they recommend. Good luck, these TP's sound so good. I really like the Grant Green - Born To Be Blue, Lee Morgan - Cornbread, Tina Brooks - Minor Move, Wayne Shorter - Etc...
