I’d like to know if it indisputably a genre or just something different.
I think the clue was kind of clarified as not these:

It could be literally anything, providing I like it.

well other than jazz, Lou Reed, metal, country/Americana/pop crossover, flamenco or 50s rock throwback. Oh and Christmas music, I ruled that out too.

For example my hunch was something like Rammstein but to most people that is metal but we already did metal but Rammstein isn’t actually metal yet that fact would be disputed. Same idea applies to a lot of punk. Like, I think The Clash is a decent guess and there should be no disputing they are punk (At least their earlier, worthwhile stuff).

Yeah I mean what I would say is let common sense rather than endless sub genres lead you, I tend to be relatively straightforward in classification. Also, know your picker rather than just guessing something you want if you want to get it right 😀

Sorry for the delay guys, I'm still coming down from my Anima/Thom Yorke high. Managed to catch two shows(Santa Barbara on the 25th and The Greek Theatre on the 29th). I'll update in a few, let me know if I missed something!.

Hints:

Guesses

What happened to Thalia?

You missed my guess : Kaiser Chiefs - Employment ;)

Also it won’t be the clash because they haven’t released an album since 2000

Genre is funny. One persons Post-Britpop is another’s Post-Punk. Anyway, I believe the picker likes some of these bands if y’all wanna use this as a resource

Is post-britpop even a thing? If it is I can’t think of anyone good in it? All the good uk bands of the early 00s were much more indebted to Gang of Four and Orange Juice or Joy Division.

I don’t know if it’s a thing, but according to a Wikipedia list I was looking at, Doves and Bloc Party were categorized as post-Britpop.

Bloc Party? Weird. 2005 is a fair bit after 1997 and they shared no sonic similarities. Definitely not here, they’re all angular post punk and then later more electronic.

doves? Maybe in terms of timing but sonically I’m not getting it.

if it exists I’m thinking a line of shame going kinda travis, starsailor, Keane and Kaiser Chiefs...

Genres and styles are like Japanese language to me: I don't get it at all. So I have my own classification for that stuff, because some stuff just don't make sense to me (like, Jagged Little Pill is pop and Emotion is pop, but in which universe those two albums are similar). Alternative music is another great example. Basically any thing can be alternative music.
So I just say shit like Xiu Xiu makes folk and I'm fine.

Right the more I think about it the less I think “post-britpop” is a genre. I’m actually even veering towards even britpop just being a scene and a time and place rather than a genre of music. Post-britpop seems to be the wilderness years of oasis imploding as a creative force in a fog of cocaine in 1997 and The Libertines reinvigorating uk rock music in 2001/2002. So it’s really a description of 5 years where there was no good music scene in the uk!

The person whose pick I want to apologise most for knocking out is @Jonathan Y

That was a great guess and Michael Kiwanuka is an excellent artist, I got my shipping confirmation of his new album yesterday and I can’t wait until it lands.

That said, if I was picking one of his it wouldn’t be his debut, Home Again. It’s a good album, very enjoyable, but it’s just another retro soul album. His second. Love & Hate, is where he goes up a gear, it is an absolutely magnificent album. If you’re minded to check him out I can but heartily encourage you to do so!
