Green Day - Dookie

I can't put my thumb on why I'm so reluctant to give this a 5, but I gave it a 4 - which, really, would be a 4.5 rounded down I suppose. I enjoy the shit out of this whenever I put it on - both in the moment and nostalgically.

I think the sophomoric content prevents it from five. I’m still kind of shocked at how much I liked American Idiot. It is overwrought at times but beyond the similar sound styles, it’s hard to believe they are the same band that made both.

In the home stretch. All the shine is gone. It's fine I guess. When I pay attention to the lyrics, I'm overanalyzing them in the context of who he became, which probably isn't fair. The production doesn't seem as great now either, but I imagine that is due to his techniques being used by others a million times since this was released. Power was the highlight of the album. He does seem like a much better emcee in the age of trap and mumble. That being said, he still has a corny forced flow that isn't helped by cadences that are slightly beyond his ability. Wish I could listen to it in a vacuum without him as baggage. Doesn't sting as much as other artists I've given up because they are pieces of shit and unlike Ryan Adams, there isn't anything here that makes me think it overly sucks to not return to it. I'm sure there are one or more other albums on the list by him. 2 stars. (would have been a 5 back in the day)

Blame Game begs the question of what is it about Rap that somehow creates these graphic depictions of sex. I'm sure there are acts in other genres that get as graphic, but it's hard to think of an act as mainstream as Kanye was in 2010. Even 2 Live Crew and GNR were not established artists (and GNR wasn't as graphic in their descriptions although if the stories about the sex during Rocket Queen actually being Axl Rose having sex with some groupie are true, I would guess it qualifies as pornography while 2 Live and Kanye do not) when they were pushing the boundaries.

Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fanatasy

Probably the only album he ever made that, for me, is worth owning. If I am able to separate the art from the artist here, this is an extremely well made album. Great samples, great variation of tempos and emotional depth, quotable rhymes... If it were two songs shorter (I never liked "Monster" or "Hell of a Life") it would justify the accolades for me.

He was never this good before or again.

The Youngbloods - Elephant Mountain

I got this in the bargain bin for a dollar at my local a while ago. I remember really liking it when I spun it when I got home, but I haven’t listened to it again since. It’s not the one with their big hit, Get Together.

I a few songs deep and was wondering how this would fair with you lot that found the Gene Clark album less than amazing. This very much sounds like the Canyon stuff morphing into the Bay scene of the time. A definite transition in music for augmented listening. I’m digging and look forward to spending a little time with it tomorrow.

The Youngbloods - Elephant Mountain

I really enjoyed the first track "Darkness, Darkness" but after that it kind of tailed off for me. The sound was kind of all over the place and nothing super memorable for me.

I actually wasn't super familiar with this band but the name sounded familiar. I listened to "Get Together" and now I understand what band this is.

Yeah it’s a little all over the place. From reading up on them (because I was completely unfamiliar)… it was transitional both in the band’s makeup and their sound.

I quite like it though. I will say it is firmly in my wheelhouse. Psychedelic folk rock.
