I've been thinking about this for a bit and trying to figure how best to pose it as a question to the group...I think most stems from my hardened stance that Talk Talk is the most under-rated (and best) group of the 80s...but I'm curious what bands/artists people identify as being representative of a particular decade.

I think I'll try breaking this into 3 categories:

definitive sound for the decade - the band/artist you most closely associate with the overall sound of the era
personal favorite - band/artist most spun from the era
underrated - band/artist you wish more people recognized the genius of

1950s:
Definitive: Miles Davis
Favorite: Dave Brubeck (HM: the Max Roach sphere of influence)
Under-Rated: Django Reinhardt

1960s:
Definitive: Bob Dylan
Favorite: Nina Simone
Under-Rated: 13th Floor Elevators

1970s:
Definitive: Pink Floyd
Favorite: Tom Waits
Under-Rated: Nick Drake

1980s:
Definitive: The Smiths
Favorite: Talk Talk
Under-Rated: Bauhaus

1990s:
Definitive: Nirvana
Favorite: Modest Mouse
Under-Rated: Eels / Toadies

2000s:
Definitive: Radiohead
Favorite: Interpol
Under-Rated: Aesop Rock

2010s:
Definitive: Kendrick Lamar
Favorite: The National
Under-Rated - Damien Jurado
