Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

I will be selling my Elac Alchemy PPA-2 soon bc I am getting a Darlington Labs MM8B. The Elac has independent, dual inputs, each of which can be MM or variable MC. I’m not replacing it bc I don’t like it. On the contrary, I think it’s fantastic, and I have posts here saying as much. I just...

To be clear, I like plenty of his work, including the Olé Coltrane 33.

This is pretty typical for KG as I hear his work. Yes, depends on the album, but it’s how most of his stuff sounds relative to/compared to the other people doing reissues these days.

The Latest News from Neptune - a Sun Ra thread

Following up on this - about Walt Dickerson “Impressions of a Patch of Blue” (with Sun Ra on piano) — I returned the shitty sounding vinyl and bought the Verve CD you recommended, and it’s a night/day difference. The cd has 4.7 rating on Discogs with 23 people weighing in, and I’d say it’s...

Thanks. I have VSS 13”, and i would think these are about the same. I mentioned above it fits pretty snuggly in the VSS 13” without the discs. Maybe the Sleeve City are roomier?

Perfect is the enemy of good. I have a bunch of generic white outer sleeves. So I put each disc in one of those and added the booklet to take up space. Then I used a box-set sleeve and some tape (not artfully applied, I know), to create a workable sleeve.

    Jazz

You’re welcome! And I have either Ethan Iverson or someone on N&G to thank for tipping me off to their existence. Ethan Iverson was heavily influenced by Mal Waldron and wrote a good blog post about him. I’ve bought several Waldron records based on this blog post...

Well, there is an issue with a good outer sleeve. It fits snugly into the VSS 13”, but that’s without the discs. I have box-set outer sleeves, but those are too big. Revisiting for possible grade inflation by me.

Rollins Vanguard just arrived, and I’m cleaning the set and hope to listen today sometime. But I’m giving BN (or whoever designed this) an A+++++ for the sleeve/package. Basically 3 regular sleeves packaged like a book, but the backs of the interior sides are typical TP photos, not the backs of...

    Phish

I saw the hate after watching n1 set opener vids, and I have to admit I was underwhelmed. It’s one reason I didn’t look at anything else before my show — I knew from the comments of people who were there what I was seeing/hearing was a narrow snapshot of the live experience. The hate was all...

    Phish

My regular crew got completely shut out on Sphere, but my exceptionally generous sister bought me a great ticket as a gift, so I was at night 4 alone but next to some really friendly/fun folks. I have plenty of great photos and videos, but they really do not do justice or come close to capturing...

    Record Store Day 2024

I’d never heard of Laufey before today on this thread, but at least a half dozen flipped copies of the RSD release were “hits” in one of my saved ebay searches for jazz records. Cheapest was $115.

    Record Store Day 2024

@MikeH @Ghost and anyone else looking for Bill Evans “Everyone Digs,” I’m going to a shop on the other side of town (thanks @Matt M for the tip to call) that supposedly has a bunch in stock. This shop marks up regular stuff from retail (TP’s are over $40), but there is no sales tax here. I...

    Record Store Day 2024

I struck out on Bill Evans and am looking for that. The only other thing I wanted this year was Mal Waldron/Steve Lacy, which I got. Both shops I went to said they only got a couple bill Evans and they were gone almost instantly

    Definitive Audiophile pressings

If anyone is on the fence about Coltrane - Olé or Ornette - Change of the Century, pull the trigger. Not trying to initiate FOMO, but i was reluctant about Ornette bc I thought I had enough Ornette. But the positive comments here and on Discogs, plus the ability to get free shipping by adding...

    Pre-Order Thread

This is a great story, and your wife must be very patient if not angelic for opening that many DBZ items before asking wtf was up. If I had tried this with my now-wife when we were engaged or dating, she’d have smelled patchouli through the gift wrapping of a Phish CD — even if there was no...

Yes — edited to correct “Clark” to “Rollins” One reason BN store was good for me is that I wanted Tina Brooks “Minor Move,” and adding that @ 20% off got me free shipping. Moreover, for some reason, Minor Move seems like the one Tone Poet that’s available on BN but nowhere else. It was “out of...

BN is shipping Sonny Rollins. Mine’s on the way. I got it for 20% off (along with Tina Brooks Minor Move TP). I’m sure Sonny will get a 30% discount at some point, but I was happy with 20% in pre-order stage.
