The Waxhole: Speakeasy & Whisk(e)y Lounge

I've not had a lot of Irish Whiskey. I mean like, proper sippin Irish whiskey. This is incredibly delicate and complex. It forces you to really pay attention, unlike a lot of Bourbon that just smashes you over the head. Excellent stuff.

    What's Spinning

Billie Marten - Drop Cherries Saw her on Amoeba's YouTube series What's In My Bag and caught my ear. Shades of Laura Marling and Julia Jacklin, but with a sweeter/hookier sense of melody than both IMO. Cool promo vid of a few songs done live:

A reviewer called it "brash". I agree. Solid stuff for <$30.

The Waxhole: Speakeasy & Whisk(e)y Lounge

About the same price ($100) as prettty much anything else Barrell puts out, minus their grey label or beyond offerings. I like Ardbeg a lot, but only had their standard bottle. Is this sweeter or more smokey than normal? I see other Ardbeg special releases, but due to how heavy on the...

Local store pick. My first Cigar Blend (i.e. Congac finished) bourbon. An added layer of rich, slight sweetness, and a touch more wood. Really good, as every Barrell item has been for me.

Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

I've heard that too, and it's still probably the best rule of thumb for most rooms. I think they tune their subs to their feet, or vice versa.

Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

I had them on a pair of Rel T/5i's I had. I'd sold the Zu Souls I was using them with and wanted to experiment on my subs. My wood floor resonated a bit with the Rel's au natural. Swapped in the fancy feet and my floor calmed down, and it seemed a little less overhang-y, slightly tighter. All...

    Definitive Audiophile pressings

Yep, I've learned to only buy Otis in mono at this point. Rhino released some all analog mono albums of his - I think???

    Definitive Audiophile pressings

FYI - Re Otis Blue, vocals are heavily panned to one channel, like a lot of Otis "stereo" mixes. If that's not an issue for you, then the rest of the mix does sound great. Drives me crazy though...

The Waxhole: Speakeasy & Whisk(e)y Lounge

I need to try the 1910. Had a couple bottles of 1920 and got a little tired of the cherry codial notes. Compass Box is great. Hedonism is my fave by tem that I've had, but thats as far up the ladder I can afford. While the reason for your family visit is no doubt sad and upsetting, there's...

This one is fine. I got it at retail ($55?), rather than the ~$150 it appears to be going for on the secondary market. I think the tannins are more forward on this one than the tasting notes listed on the bottle.

Impulse buy. Too sweet for my tastes, even by Balvenie Double Barrel standards.

Agreed. It definitely pops off the shelf amongst all the brown-liquid-in-glass-bottles surrounding it.

The Waxhole: Speakeasy & Whisk(e)y Lounge

Ok, tonight is starting out with this gem. By Islay standards/my experience, its pretty tame in the briney, smokey, peaty dept. A great value at ~$60 round these parts. Lil heavier 100 proof than most scotch. Nice gateway whiskey for the Islay curious, as it's not too heavy handed in any one...

The bottle is pretty bad, both in form and function. Its the dinkiest little cap. I actually had the Seagrass as my 3rd pour tonight (1oz measured pours, just to be clear). Thats my first bottle, and I'll definitely be replacing it. Nice change up to have in the cabinet.

And sometimes you realize you actually can't turn back after that taste. You'll be cleaning your Paua stylus in Pappy 23 soon enough

Nikka "from the barrel". Lovely Japanese whiskey with a bit more barrel and swagger than other Nikka I've had. This one comes and goes in availability. Usually a limit one situation.

Anthony Bourdain helped popularize Pappy. He would be coy about his favorite bourbon, then he finally spoke about it openly and I THINK that's when shit got dumb around that brand. Honestly, 23 year old bourbon,or whatever the oldest version is, sounds terrible to me. Mmm, astringent oak.

It has the pedigree of being the first single barrel bourbon on the market. And the horsie on top. I think its the horsie causing all the fuss, tbh.
