I think the US is used to spiced rum, like Captain Morgan. Not clean rum like we do. Which is just sweet alcohol. I once tried spiced rum from the Maldives or Seychelles (can't remember which one). It has vanilla bean pods inside the bottle. Definitely not the mixing type.

Caipiroska. Substitute rum/cachaça for vodka and it's almost the same. Not as sweet though.

Cachaça is rum. We call it caña here. Any sugar cane distilled alcohol is just rum. But for this concoction, it was Velho Barreiro which is my favorite cachaça.
