The Official Needles and Grooves 1001 Album Generator Project (aka Preachin’ about the Preachers if today’s selection sucks)

Slipknot is one of only two nu-metal acts I can actually stand ( the other being System of a Down). I think I only actually like the first two Slipknot albums though. I hadn’t heard this one before but it was pretty trite and boring, which is weird coming from the band that made the ultimate...

The Official Needles and Grooves 1001 Album Generator Project (aka Preachin’ about the Preachers if today’s selection sucks)

I actually have no problem with it being bloated. I listen to it occasionally and it still gives me this great rush everytime I hear it. The strange production with Newstedts bass practically missing only makes it sound rawer and almost scary, as if they’re playing in a compression chamber or...

My favorite Metallica album is actually ”And Justice For All” (I will even debate it that the crappy production just makes it better), but yes, ”Master of Puppets” is their most influential album and their masterpiece. Essential to the evolution of heavy metal. 5 stars

I like "Bummed" but do we really need two Happy Mondays-albums in this book? "Pills, thrills..." is the better album IMO. The vinyl printed inner sleeve is...something else. 4 stars. Currently catching up on earlier picks. 13th Floor Elevators: I get that they're super influential to a lot of...

I love Lloyd Cole, and this is his big classic. This is probably another hot take, but I do prefer his later stuff after he dropped the Commotions, though. The albums "Love Story" and "Music in a Foreign Language" are both pretty awesome! Seen him live a couple of times too, and he is a great...

I love Dinosaur Jr but I haven't actually listened to "Bug" (or even the first three albums) all that much to be honest. I do think "You're Living All Over Me" is a more influental album, but "Bug" is where Mascis hit his song writing stride that later bloomed on the Sire albums, that I still...

Hadn't heard of him before, and modern reggae is a blind spot for me. But it was fine. Not sure I will pick it up again though.

I ended up devoting most of my day yesterday to the entire MBV ouvre, and I concede. "isn't anything" and "loveless" are pretty much tied for the top spot. They are actually more different than I've always remembered them to be. Also, nothing in their entire output comes close to "you made me...

Same story here. As I said before, I love ”Loveless”, but that one sounds a lot as if a guy has fiddled with it in the studio for three years straight. ”Isn’t anything” sounds like a band with something to prove. And the tunes are better on this one generally.

Hot take: I genuinely think this is a better album than ”Loveless”. And I love ”Loveless”.

This has been a great week! Kings of Leon was a good reminder of a once great band. 4 stars! Don't know why but I actually hadn't listened to that Lorde album before! I've listened a lot to Pure Heroine and Solar Power though. It was just as good as I expected. 4 stars! I hadn't heard The Cars...

I’ve almost forgot that I also really enjoyed those first Kings of Leon albums. They’re so associated with that dreadful Sex on Fire-song now though.

Similar for me although I kinda lost interest with Day and Age. But a friend recommended Pressure Machine to me, and it pretty much blew me away. A bit more rootsy and heartland rock sound wise, but with some great storytelling in the lyrics.

I agree that Sam's Town is a good album, but their latest album Pressure Machine is also shockingly good IMO. It was actually in my top 5 albums of 2021!

"All of These Things That I've Done" is a perfect song. There, I said it. From the tentative, Bowie-esque build up, the primitive, yet totally infectious guitar line, the way Brandon Flowers accentuates the consonants in "direction to perfection" before the gloroius chorus kicks in to the...

The Stooges is a band I like more in theory than I actually enjoy listen to them. Iggys solo stuff works better for me. I also think their other two albums are better. That being said, this is a certified classic, and the main riff in TV Eye is pure fire.

Man, I'm down in the rabbit hole now. Those years around the turn of the millennium was transformative for me in many ways, (turning 25, finding true love/getting my heart broken, going to the university, having my first real job, strong friendships that have faded since etc), and listening to...

I haven't listened to this album (or Badly Drawn Boy) in a long time. But I own all of his albums up to Born in the UK on CD and it is a solid output of brilliant song crafting. But the debut was such a great shock to the system and one of the albums that ushered in the new millennium for me. It...

I remember picking up Double Nickels after some guitar mag listed it as one of the best "alternative rock" albums of all time. This was in the early 90s when the mainstream was still trying to figure out what the hell was going on with rock n' roll in the wake of Nirvana. I was pretty...
