    Definitive Audiophile pressings

'Cut from Tapes' is the new "From the original master tapes' line, as so many first generation master tapes are gone, deteriorated or otherwise not obtainable. I don't know that Miles OJC, I do know that the Miles AP box from 2008 shows plenty of tape issues and that Workin could not be taken...

    Definitive Audiophile pressings

Why "interesting"? What i find interesting is that the advertising/promotional sites, like Tracking Angle, are already pimping this set and flip-flopping on their stellar assessment of the now much older Grundman box. And Rhino has already admitted the S/T will be from a copy tape. This is...

    Definitive Audiophile pressings

If the original master was so poor that it could not be used for the AP, it hasn't magically gotten better.

100% right. I have the BG Doors box and it sounds great. Actually, it sounds far more authentic and truthful to the sound of the originals than the AP, which I find to have been plumped up and made to sound 'audiophile' - not the Doors sound at all. I have a few Rhino - the Strange Days mono...

    Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Can you imagine the cost if the pressing plant were to drop ship to individual retail customers on top of shipping the wholesale shipment to the customer warehouse? No manufacturer will do this. They don't deal with retail. Now, if you expect VMP to create a European warehouse (ignoring for...

    The Blue Note Thread

He is wrong more than he is right. Very few of the 'unreleased back in the day' BN's had cover art and were at some point on the release schedule. Only a handful really. Most received their first art with the LT series or from King in Japan. Later day CD and vinyl reissues of these sessions...

    The Blue Note Thread

Kofi was never released because it never was a complete session. Michael Cuscuna assembled the releaseable tracks from two rejected sessions to make a complete record.

    The Blue Note Thread

In the late 1970's Michael Cuscuna was brought in to review all the BN tape archive and find material suitable for release, particularly complete unreleased sessions. He found quite a few of merit. He found quite a few that were justifiably held back, and some outright duds. The ones that he...

Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

Gus Cannon sold out? Does that mean they pressed 300 copies, or the remaining subscribers think it is a Stax soul record, or half were just unwittingly shifted over from another stream and don't realize they are getting this? Or...the new strategy is to stoke FOMO by claiming it is sold out...

Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

I ran out of stuff I wanted long ago, and the giveaway subscription offers pushed me into stuff that I really wouldn't have touched otherwise, and in at least half the cases, I was right to pass on it first time. That's why there is a glut of VMP in second hand vinyl shops lately.

Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

I received the 'mag' yesterday. Quick read through, nothing really interesting, a puff promo for upcoming ROTM titles basically. I don't give a shit for a lame member profile, the crossword is a cool idea, too much pushing to buy back titles. Unusual for me, as I tend to hang on to stuff - it...

Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

They may not have known they were running international at a loss. I've seen this before - in bigger companies - that have no idea what cost of sales are for different customer types or even lines of business, because they are all in a single cost accounting pot on the income statement. I'm...

    Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Agree. I don't know IVF much (in vitro fertilization I know a bit better, unfortunate acronym) and I feel like Rhino High Fidelity has hurt VMP as they are saving the 'A' titles for themselves, just like Chad is doing with Craft. Although both labels have deep enough catalog to go around. As...

    Vinyl Me Please Essentials

So am I. If not, someone else will step into that market niche. It IS viable, but likely the VMP model - handling logistics in house, which is the toughest part to do if not at scale - is not. Even the major labels don't really handle logistics. They outsource it to third party operations...

    Definitive Audiophile pressings

I feel for the most part this type of nostaligia in the U.S. is what they are relying on to sell these. And sell them to a majority of buyers who already have the proper Beatles catalog. I also feel that if your father had access to UK originals at the time he would have ignored these botch jobs.

True. When a company goes under, all the inventory goes into the bankruptcy trustee's hands, and will be sold as part of the bankruptcy proceedings. None will go to pre-order customers, and pre-order funds (which are going to be in the general bank account) go to the order of creditors - secured...

Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

True. In fact, the Joni catalog reissue series with lacquers cut by Grundman and broadly available on vinyl and digital are much more responsible. And 3600 units sold is far from a mega increase. Back in the day, a cutout would get better numbers.

    Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Companies experiencing solvency issues rarely issue refunds, and in the rare case they do, will try to drag it out as long as possible. When you are in a cash crisis, the order goes: taxes first, payroll second, rent third, suppliers fourth and everyone else goes in the hat with a chance to get...

Record cleaning - what's your method?

I never do a pre-rinse. Seems redundant, just use a dry brush to get rid of any surface debris and then let the RCM do its job. I do use distilled water, only as a rinse when using Disc Doctor fluids. I'm sure the MOFI distilled water sounds better, as it is digitally sourced.;)

    Definitive Audiophile pressings

These crap tapes are in the U.S. so it makes sense they would be cut there, and the distinguished Kevin Reeves because they are probably being pressed at the worst, cheapest plant - United. Rush to pre-order!! Beatles!! In mono, from fourth generation dub tapes with added heavy reverb!!
