Apparently, with the exception of a few, bands inspired by Big Star are just as big of a blind spot as Big Star for me. Beside REM who is a top 5 band for me, most of that list falls into the "I've heard of that guy/band" territory for me.
Who would be an example of bands that were trying to sound like Big Star. I didn't get any sense of one album of any obvious "oh yeah, this sounds a lot like...."
I'm doing the math. I must have been obsessed with this album a few years after it's release. I probably just knew the Down and All Mixed Up videos at the time and then hit my 311 phase in high school. That at least gave me a few years back.
This is one of those albums where I'm aware of the band, aware of the album, definitely seen the album cover before but I can't say I actually know anything by them.
Obviously I recognize the That 70's Show Theme. I also recognize "Thirteen" but not sure if it's from a cover or what.
I'm only a few songs in but so far I can say this is definitely not what I was expecting. I was expecting a typical Beach Boys, poppy sounding, fun in the sun album. So far it's just....weird.
I'm not super familiar with The Beach Boys catalog, but that definitely is not what I would expect the album cover to an album called Surfs Up to look like.
