Needles & Grooves AotM /// Vol. 46 – April 2023 /// Sissoko Segal Parisien Peirani - Les Égarés

Really cool Pick! And thanks for the journey. (I was partial to the Portugal section, as it was my last "big" trip with just my wife, and loved every second including an amazing night in Coimbra, which was basically just picked as a stopping off point) This is why I love this site - this would...

    New Music Friday!

Scott McMicken (dr. dog) has a "solo" effort out today... solo with a full band (including Michael Nau!). I'm going to need to dig into this one a little more, but it feels way more freewheeling than Dr. Dog stuff. There's some jazzy influence, some latin, and even some reggae (?) vibes.

    New Music Friday!

Another one that I'm keeping an eye on Mystic 100's - On a Micro Diet. I'd lost track of Milk Music, but tomorrow they're back for the first time since 2017 as Mystic's 100's. Grunge-y/Garage-y/psychedelic/I might need Bluecloud777 to come up with a better genre name. The advance single clocks...

    New Music Friday!

Another one that popped up on my radar is Whitney's Playground - Sunset Sea Breeze. It's an appropriately named album of dreamy indie pop. If only it weren't 35 F and dreary here.

Needles & Grooves AotM /// Vol. 46 – April 2023 /// Sissoko Segal Parisien Peirani - Les Égarés

I'm taking a brief break from creepily lurking to say that this is really incredible work. I'm completely lost like the guys in the post above this one, but enjoying every second. Really tremendous.

If he was mentioned, I missed it, so a shout for the always reliable Doug Paisley. Folky/(canadian)Americana/Rootsy.

    Needles & Grooves AotM /// Vol. 45 – March 2023 /// The Men - New York City

Nice pick! I grabbed a copy and can't wait to spin it. The Men have been on and off my radar for years now. In my (limited) opinion, they are a bit of a victim of how prolific they are as well as some of their genre-blurringness. They're a band that I always enjoy, but also always seem to...

    Needles & Grooves AotM /// Vol. 44 – February 2023 /// Pavement – Wowee Zowee

Did any of you all see Malkmus on that Groove Denied tour? It was really something. Wowee Zowee - just the normal pressing on the Matador site, or is there another one I should be looking for?

    Needles & Grooves AotM /// Vol. 44 – February 2023 /// Pavement – Wowee Zowee

Nice choice! I'm looking forward to the writeup on this one. For reasons I cannot explain, this is (by a wide margin) my least listened to Pavement Album. I should probably fix that.

    Needles & Grooves AotM /// Vol. 44 – February 2023 /// Pavement – Wowee Zowee

Willy Vlautin is also a hell of a writer. I read a couple of his books last year: The Motel Life and The Night Always Comes. They're dark slow-burn reads. But somehow I've never really listened to his music. I'll remedy that now... If his songwriting is anything close to that, I'm in.

    Needles & Grooves AotM /// Vol. 44 – February 2023 /// Pavement – Wowee Zowee

I'm just watching along with zero to add. I think that's Daniel Jones of the New York Giants. He played American Football at Duke. He's getting sacked (maybe?) by some guy named Watt who plays for the Steelers, who (hails from and) went to Wisconsin. Nice work so far Hatfield. I can't wait to...

    2022 Reading Challenge

Well, looks like it's going to be 28 this year. I think I was aiming for 24, so I should be ok with that, but I really fell off at the end. I think next year I'll go for 30. 28. The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Holy shit. Obviously you don't win the pulitzer by accident, but wow. The only Cormac...

    2022 Reading Challenge

Tough question, only because they are so different. Nickel Boys was the first of his that read, and it really blew me away. I loved Sag Harbor, and it's a bit of a lighter read (without giving away too much). Underground Railroad is incredible too (and as you may guess a difficult subject...

    2022 Reading Challenge

I went through a phase last year where I read everything Whitehead has ever written (actually I just looked and there are a couple I missed). The thing that impressed me most about him is how he can swing from one style to the next. Sag Harbor is a real slice of life / coming of age story, and...

It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

Hey, finally some good news: Last week, only a few days before the most senior executives of FIFA, soccer’s world governing body, were set to jet into Doha for meetings ahead of a World Cup 12 years in the making, local officials delivered the bad news: The five-star hotel picked to house...

Fifteen years ago (yesterday, actually) I happened to go to a WC qualifier in Buenos Aires.* When I told the guy that I went with “I’ll get you a beer at the stadium,” he looked at me like I had three eyes. “Uhhh, they don’t sell beer at the games. That would be a bad idea.” To me it’s less...

So this had to be the plan all along, right? https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/18/sports/soccer/world-cup-beer-qatar.html I've felt pretty conflicted about this world cup, and have only been begrudgingly looking forward to it. Now...I think I'm rooting for chaos. I'm not saying I believe this...

    New Music Friday!

The new One Eleven Heavy is sounding really nice to me. Kind of a southern-funky-jammy-70s rock vibe. (Not sure why it’s still listed as preorder on Bandcamp, it’s out in the wild)

Yeah, this is exactly my (poorly made) point. The teams that have had success with designated players have either found up and comers (largely from South America) that are using it as a launch pad to Europe or 30ish year olds who have had good to very good careers, but are restless at biggish...
