A couple of possibilities re: the drawers. First, they may be wide enough that the records could face front, with two rows. Second, given that only one drawer would be pulled out at a time, you could stand beside that drawer and have a front-on view of the records as they're stored in the photo...

Wish I could help you out but I bought my stands along with my speakers as display models from a local dealer and the stands were already filled with kitty litter. I don't know how much is in there, but my guess would be about 75%. And yeah, I think your best bet would be to fill them half way...
