Pro tip : any “smart” device for your home , make sure to setup a guest network on your router so the traffic is separated should any device take and attack of sorts and or spy
It's just Bluetooth and it connects to nothing but my phone. So I think it's pretty secure, it's not on my wifi but that's really good advice thanks man!
The garage is in the back yard, and the light switch is inside it, but the lights are exterior patio lights. So in this case, the phone is much easier than putting my shoes on, going outside, unlocking the garage door, and turning the lights on.
We got some Amazon Echos around Black Friday and love the automation. We have a few smart plugs and a smart light bulb in the bedroom (that helps my wife wake up by gradually increasing the brightness in her lamp). No light switches yet though I don't know if I'd really need that or not.
I don't have any smart stuff in the house, don't want it. But this switch is about the dumbest smart thing ever. Barely works, but if it means I cab let the dog out back with some lights without putting my jacket and shoes on and trudging out in the snow at midnight then I'm good with it.
I didn't think we'd ever want it either but it definitely comes in handy. We have a few routines set... Saying "good night" turns off any lights in the apartment that might still be on... "Bedtime" turns off my wife's lamp in the bedroom (if it's even on) and turns on the fan we use when we sleep ... "good morning" turns on the kitchen light so we can feed the cat
