I still remember people saying “who’s Bonnybear?” When they (Bon Iver) were nominated for a Grammy in 2011 for their second album. I was so shocked at the time. Most people are clueless though. Think about walking down the street and ask 100 people if they know who boygenius is, you’d get maybe 5 people out of that 100.

We live in a music nerd bubble. Normies really don’t explore much outside top 40.

True. I guess I consider Swifties to be music obsessives just with a very narrow scope. There’s a lot of folks that don’t follow ANY mainstream music. They are the sort that when you ask them what they are currently listening to and they usually respond with the last album they purchased during there senior year of high school 20+ years ago.
