Out of respect for the dead, I will not name the band...
However, I was once in a band that opened for a semi-large group. Their amps were on, but no sound came out. Drums were muted and symbols were doubled. Microphones were off during song performances. Basically, people were paying money to watch the band jump around and mime to a playback of their songs from an iPod going directly to the sound board.
