By genre, and then I just push the ones I just played back. This way I am sure I play them all quite regularly.

Like uncle - Discogs Alphabetical is the way to go. Especially if you also keep a very updated Discogs.

Artists in alphabetical, then by year within an artist. Easy to find everything for me. For some reason I've pulled out classical as it's own section, that's done by composer. Should maybe sort by genre as well, but also I don't think my collection's big enough to make than necessary.

I have them Discogs order (abc by first name, then by year of release). Soon I plan to buy a mini shelf and pull out any artist that won my AOTY and any artist to win the Grammy AOTY and put them in their own spot

If your collection is of any substantial size and you keep your Discogs up to date, I would recommend organizing them based off of of alphabetical by artist then by release date as determined by Discogs. It provides a handy map to find what you need and also makes it easy to file it back once you’re done.

I tried genre but it drove me crazy trying to figure out how specific to get. I caved and went discogs alphabetically and it is pretty convenient. I choose to separate hip hop just so everything else fit nicely into one 4x2 ikea shelf but that was easy.

I do alphabetical by artists (band name ignoring "the" or by last name, and sometimes I make a call when an artist name is in a band name like Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, I place under P with the other Tom Petty's). I also have things split up in genres, to allow me to move blocks of records around when I need to manage space. I wouldn't do that if I had nice uniform shelving on one wall though.
tvham
tvham
Alphabetical by artist, then a couple of genres in their own cubes (jazz, soundtracks, rap and hip hop, etc)

I'm similar to @tvham ... Alphabetical by artist, then a few extra genres after that (mostly soundtracks, comedy, and compilations)
