Start by listening to some Husker Du. I like New Day Rising and Zen Arcade. Bob Mould solo albums, Workbook, Black Sheets of Rain are good ones too.

"Silver Age" was the first Bob Mould solo record I heard and I still really like that one. It's a good solid intro. Also listen to the Sugar album "Copper Blue" since that is the best things he's done post-Husker Du.

@Crenshaw Blvd named the two best Husker Du albums but I want to throw "Flip Your Wig" out there since it's an underrated gem.

Bob mould Solo i ´d go with Workbook and Black sheets of rain, but my absolutefavourite work from him is Sugar- Copper Blue. I actally like that one more than any Hüsker Dü record.

He has a pretty varied career and output. I would actuallystart with a few of his current albums and work backwards. While Husker is one of my favourite bands, speed-fueled hardcore is not for everyone

I would say try and hit all three phases. My picks would be:
Hüsker Dü - Zen Arcade (Is this in print on vinyl?)
Sugar - Copper Blue
Bob Mould - Silver Age

I agree with others that Copper Blue is his best, and most accessible, album, so start with that one first.

Thanks a lot everyone. I am now seriously contemplating buying the Bob Mould - Distortion (1989-1995) box set. It has all his Sugar output, plus Workbook and Black Sheets of Rain and a rarities album from that time period. Good I discovered this at lunch, and not tonight after a bottle of wine. I'm pretty sure @Corycm has all those boxes. I'd love to own them if I had the shelf space and disposable cash

Yup. Own all the (deluxe) boxes and they sound really good. Demon did a great job with them.

I'd start with Workbook and Copper Blue. But Husker Du's final album Warehouse: Songs and Stories is tip top as well, maybe a better entry point than their earlier rawer SST albums. It's out of print on vinyl unfortunately.

FWIW I also like Copper Blue (you can probably get the version packaged with Beaster pretty cheap) and Workbook as entry points.

I started with Copper Blue and really enjoyed it. It had a lot of the songs I was already familiar with.
