I wouldn’t say they’re that similar different language, different genres. Maybe a couple of songs sound the same here and there

Nah one is post-rock and the other is post-Britpop

You make a good point though, and it made me have a think about it. I would label Sigur Ros post-rock but I think they've written more just straightforward rock songs than they have post-rock songs now.

Now I guess I have to listen to Doves and see what this is all about.

Labels be damned. The song structures and melodies are strikingly similar to me.
I CAN SAY ASSUREDLY WITH ABSOLUTELY ZERO HYPERBOLE THAT THEY ARE EXACTLY THE SAME IN EVERY WAY EXCEPT FOR THE LANGUAGE THING

LOL, hang on, this entire time I kept reading Doves as Dawes. I don't think I've ever listened to Doves.

Dunno, doves have never reminded me of whale song in quite the same way as the nature documentary soundtrack artists from Iceland have…

Apparently the only Sigur Ros I've heard is ambient or ambient adjacent and has no characteristics I would ascribe to Doves. I know I've heard at least 3 Sigur Ros albums and every single Doves album.

I've only listened to the one with the baby on the cover and the one with the naked people and although I EXPECTED ambient, they both had a heck of a lot of Dovesy sounding Dovesness.

This was what the Doves song structure sounded like before they heard Sigur Ros

Good point. "Doves sounds like Sigur Ros" it is, then.

But the bigger question: do they both sound like Steely Dan?

I'm going to have to listen to some more Doves and Sigur, because what I've heard does not support that connection

Look. I'm right and you're all wrong. I'm just going to need all of you to accept this.

Lost Souls or Last Broadcast, or both. I like all of them but those are probably the best ones. And their albums aren't necessarily front loaded. Some of the best tracks tend to be on later sides too.

Yeah those two. I prefer Lost Souls as a single piece but Last Broadcast is a really strong album too and probably has most of the “hits” with “There Goes The Fear”, “Satellites” and, of course “Pounding”.
