Depends on the band and how much you want to get into them. I've got some greatest hits records of bands I like to hear occasionally but I'm not going all-in on their catalog. VU, for me, is hugely influential and worthy of going all-in..
With that said, I'll feel much better about you if you own a 2LP VU comp as opposed to owning no VU at all. That would stop me from driving up there and having a serious sit down.
@Yer Ol' Uncle D yeah see that's what I'm struggling with. I just don't really have the space to go all in on many bands. And I'm almost full up. But as discographies go theirs isn't all that big, what like 6 albums basically?
If you're just focused on VU studio output while they were together it's 4 records. There's major influence and impact in those 4. And it only takes up two more slots than your compilation.
I'd lean VU & Nico, The Velvet Underground & Loaded over a comp. Loaded may not be as influential as the other two records, but is a good pop record and it has some of their bigger "hits". I like White Light/White Heat too, and it is a very influential record in its own way, but it is the one I listen to the least. It would be the one I would add down the road.
Actually, if they have the "lost" album/"1969" as a stand alone release now, I'd recommend that one too. Too many good songs from those sessions to ignore it.
I would, but I wouldn't necessarily rush out to get White Light/White Heat. There are some decent box sets out there, that help you knock everything out at one time, but you have to do your homework. Some are stereo, some are mono, and some just collect recent reissues.
I think the 3rd VU album is the one to go for first, with Candy Says, Pale Blue Eyes, I’m Set Free, Beginning To See The Light. But then again, who am I to tell you which Lou Reed album to buy....
As opposed to @Murfocakes, I am the man to tell you which Lou Reed album to buy - all of them. I have every Lou Reed record available on vinyl on my shelf.
Actually, that kind of fanatical collecting probably disqualifies me from recommending which Lou reed record to buy.
