If we can’t work to help those countries obtain and administer huge volumes of vaccines we risk not only further death on a catastrophic scale but also in creating the potential for mass mutations of the virus which could take us all back to the worst of it.

Those potential mutations really worry me.

Think even saying thing are returning to "normal" here is getting ahead of ourselves. Lead news item tonight was about how there won't be another surge, and we can go on holidays. All seems far too optimistic.

Well considering we are still in a lockdown amidst a third wave and that only 30% of the population have been vaccinated, I'm cautiously optimistic at best

I think a lot of the commentary and certainly statements direct from governments is hinting that whatever happens, there won't be further lockdowns etc. We know COVID-19 isn't going away and the vaccine program is the safest we're going to be with it and if you believe the scientists, they can react quickly to variant mutations. Governments are lining us up for a 'time to deal with it' approach.

I think in a world where the governments of developed countries actually have a shit and were running proper humanitarian schemes sharing vaccines in areas where supply is short that this would be a possibility. Leaving aside the tragedy of mass loss of life, the fear is that we are leaving fertile breeding grounds for mutation that will outpace the vaccine development.

I definitely think we have a couple more years of seeing high pockets of misery in different locations around the world until the vaccine program has truly kicked in on a global scale. With that, I'm booked in for jab #2 on Saturday and can't wait.

Just got my letter - jab 2 is happening on Tuesday.

I think it will take me a while to get used to the new normal. I was in the City Centre for the first time in almost 6 months last week. Pubs and restaurants open, and I had no inclination to go for a pub lunch. Just didn't feel right. Still went record shopping though!
