Yeah, she's a weirdo. I don't like it when it's this cold, but it's a school trip with her Plein Air et Sciences Experientielles class, so she's excited. Back country skiing and winter camping. They were supposed to stay in quinzees (snow shelters) they were going to build, but I think with it this cold they are staying in a cabin with a wood stove instead.
It is an outdoor science program, but we live up in the Yukon in northern Canada, nowhere near LA.
Funny, at 14, my daughter would be more anxious going to a big city like LA, than camping in the cold in the wilderness.
Very cool, I used to teach natural science in Leadville, Colorado (10,200' above sea level). At least once a semester, we would venture into the S. Rockies for 10 days on telemark skis, building quinzees, studying winter ecology and (hopefully) skiing powder.
