She's the hero we need right now. Seriously though, she writes insanely good lyrics and is a master of the dark arts of deadpan and sarcasm. Musically, a lot of her stuff to date has a similar tone, but, like Elliott Smith, when your lyrics are that good, you can get away with mining the same musical ground.
@JonnyH no definitely not. It’s just there are other musicians who are doing more/less the same thing as she is who are not as popular.
she ticks a lot of boxes currently as @Aron mentioned, not to forget that she’s also very “in” with her witticisms and dry sense of humor that we all can relate to. Those all play into it.
Yah I have no idea how anyone breaks out and gets any sort of fame. I've been working in music long enough to have seen some of the best musicians I've ever heard give up on being a pro musician while there's bands like the head and the heart that exist.
Tbf I saw a couple early AOTY lists with her album highly ranked and made me think this. Like it’s an 8/10 album for me, but other albums I’ve liked more this year. But that’s just my opinion
She definitely has one of the best publicists in the game, and her social media keeps her buzzing a lot, but I can see how those would be a bit off-putting. I really like her work but generally agree with you.
Not sure how much strategy went into it, but, the way the last few years have worked out, she's had a string of music projects/releases that have kept her active & in the news/blogs. I do think she deserves credit for keeping her late night show performance appearances interesting during the pandemic. She's done some of the more creative remote performances I've seen.
