i'm not sure if this is still a thing, but i remember being told by a couple recruiters and job advisers that putting all the relevant keywords you can think of in super tiny white text at the bottom of your resume couldn't hurt you in terms of the algorithms scanning the documents and passing it through.

I just amend some of my skills and job descriptions so that it has a lot of the same words they use in the job posting to get around algorithms. But I have to admit, I'm in health IT where they don't care as much about how a resume reads or looks.

@nolalady yeah, it's tough, because I'm applying to some firms, which don't tend to use those kinds of filtering methods, and that's what my resume is generally geared towards. But I'm also submitting to some in-house roles with tech companies, and can pretty much assume that they WILL be using them, but that whole thing is very new to me.

There are many niche and boutique firms that specialize in resume preparation for your particular industry. I just got done using two of them last week. They were worth the money/friend favors.

I learned how to make a solid resume stand out in a graphic design class. I think it looks great, but I also don't think it's ever actually worked.

I've worked at a recruiting company for over 8 years now so I spend ALOT of time searching for/screening/modifying resumes.
IMO a professional resume service isn't worth the money. Just make sure your relevant skills and experience are on there and a skills section at the top is a good idea (put it at the top because some of these systems search by "recent" so the bottom won't pull it up).

@Jmcg85 as if anyone needs more excuses to unfollow me than they already have lol

Mainly just keep everything consistent and cleanly formatted and don't be too verbose. Unless you're in a more technical role like Software Developer, Systems Engineer, etc. In that case as long as you have the skills it doesn't matter.
And if you're applying to a specific position as opposed to posting on job boards, modify it slightly based on what they are looking for, like said above.

Skip the resume and just send dirty/vaguely threatening stick figures on bar napkins.
