I reallly enjoy watching Redzone for football . It's 7 of hours commercial free and basically only shows the highlights of every game live. Also gambling, helps. I like fanduel or draftkings you can bet anywher from 10 cents to 10k . Having a little money on a game always makes it a bit more interesting to me.

Speaking as a long-suffering Toronto Maple Leafs fan, the best, least stressful and disappointing years of my life were when I didn't care about sports at all. For a neutral party, though, the NHL is in the middle of the semi-finals and to me (biased) there is nothing like playoff hockey.

Picking a team (in whatever sport) makes it easier to follow and pick up, but marrying yourself to a team is a recipe for heartburn. Also it works for some people to play fantasy, but it ruins games for me. Also watching with someone who knows what’s going on helps immensely to explain plays/rules/weirdness. And booze doesn’t hurt.

Pick a fun team and start watching. You are in Cali, you have some good local options. Fantasy sports/sports betting can bring added interest also.

As clarification- I know all the rules of all the major sports, and played a few myself in high school and in college intramural leagues and such. I have my childhood teams and all, I guess I just don't have the attention span to sit there and watch a game anymore.

In that case, I've found that delving deeper into strategy and especially analytics has made watching more enjoyable and richer. It helps to learn about different players' strengths/weaknesses, different teams' approaches to aspects of the game, "optimal" usage, etc. Also following fellow fans/writers on twitter makes it pretty engaging and you can learn a lot.

Yeah, with baseball, football, and Basketball (not so much Hockey and Soccer) you can just have it on while you do other things. Lots of stoppage you can do some other activity you enjoy while it’s on TV in the background. If there is enough intrigue It’ll draw ya in.

It’s possible your tastes just changed. I kind of got that way about movies. I can barely sit through an entire movie at home and you’d have to put a gun to my head to go to a theater.

Love this post. I used to like a bunch of sports, and my life trajectory has been about shedding interests in sports (football, then basketball, then baseball, then …). 20 year old me woulda thought this was impossible, but current me wonders why I spent so much time watching games. The only sport I watch now, and basically only in playoffs, is ice hockey. That's because playoff hockey is the best.

Speaking as a 21 year Technical Director of a Canada's #1 sports television network, sports are terrible, they're only good for heartbreak and no one should ever watch them.

Thank you and goodnight.

I'm kidding. I think all the suggestions above are great.

But seriously, heartache.

Avoid statistics! They don’t give a true picture and are really fucking boring. Booze and other boozy people who are shouting for the opposition make it fun too.

I also would avoid NFL football simply because all the stops in play, injuries stoppages and endless rule reviews are pretty much everything bad about sports. College football is much much better to watch.

Have you ever got into combat sports? The UFC has been putting on great fights during this pandemic. And they have been on ESPN a lot so you don't always have to pay crazy ppv prices.

I used to love to watch all the big 4 sports. I stopped watching baseball because the season is too long and they love to cheat. Next up was basketball. I just got bored watching it even though I played it so much. I stopped watching football a couple of years ago mainly to boycott that Mike Tomlin was still the coach of the Steelers.

And after the first year, I found myself not missing it and really enjoy having Sunday’s free to do what I want. Now I have hockey. Watch that! It’s fast and hard hitting
