They are going a bit overboard on the merch front. Even before the lockdown they were maybe pushing it a bit. If it's keeping them going through the pandemic then fair enough...

But aren't pretty much all of those deluxe editions that come out a year after the original kinda dirty cash grabs? Different cover artwork, and they usually feature 3-4 songs that were B-sides or post album singles. I've seen 'em from the likes of St. Vincent, Norah Jones, etc.

Usually I'd agree with it but the guys in the band are seriously awesome and incredibly nice. I'm also not sure how much they have control over it vs the label.

I know one of the shirt designs was a collaboration with the new FC Austin soccer team. I dunno. Personally, I think it is smart, and that they are doing what they can do in this weird time to try and stay active. I'm seeing a lot of artists rolling out new merch these days, and fewer of the direct livestreams. I'm not sure if the livestreams end up generating the "tips" that are needed to pay the bills.

I'm one of the few that have never owned the album but the Texas Edition sold me.

Personally I would have been ok with a single LP of just the new songs plus live tracks but was ok paying up for the 2x LP + 7" since I love the album so much.

@Aron Even Skillet and Poppy are doing this. It's really not that uncommon
