@gregathon - I also loved TX Jelly, but I thought the production was a bit of a mixed bag. Some of the songs sounded great, but some of them weren't that well recorded and were overly rough around the edges. I agree this album has a little more gloss, but I think it's more a sign of growth as they've all improved in their techniques.
I also think this album shows a little more of their range of influences while maintaining their unique sounds. This album is even less "country" while still finding a home in that classification. I like the direction they're heading.
I'm going to keep playing it until it clicks (especially because I preordered the VMP version). While the singles have been enjoyable, nothing blew me out of the water like their last album did. I totally support their evolving sound, but I also really just wanted TX Jelly Pt 2. haha
I think a lot of people will feel the same about the new album. It's certainly less "country" than TX Jelly was overall. I always liked the songs that don't fit into "country" as easily the most (Bondurant Woman, Superstition) and I think they really built on that sound this time around. I love that they don't really fit in that country box.
