We are feeling extra lucky, my gf graduated two years ago with her masters, it would've put us in a difficult position if she was still in school. Especially since I can't get out of America due to countries actively blocking us from entering.

My brother is doing his PhD in California, where he lives with his American girlfriend. He now may have to come back to Mexico and be away from her for a whole semester. This is just terrible stuff. Like, if these students are in the country lawfully, why kick them out?

ICE is showing they never cared about the legality of immigration. They hate immigration, full-stop.

Of course what you say is true, but it also kind of looks like they are trying to force Universities to open in the fall, to avoid "being responsible" for voiding these visas. Just terrible that the only action we are seeing from our government is trying to force everything back to normal instead of making educated decisions with the virus in mind.

Unfortunately I think it would be longer than a semester, unless Biden wins and is able to reverse the damage, at the rate America is going I have little faith a vaccine or cure will be available by the time next year begins. It's cruel and is completely unfair to be forcing these decisions onto Universities. Students lives are at risk and for our leadership it's all just a game.

Yeah, apparently racism trumps capitalism under our current regime unfortunately and obviously they both are more important than common human decency. 5 more months Lord willing, 5 more months.

These Universities should create a bogus elective that was mandatory for all visa students to take that would require them to show up to class one time and it would be pass/fail. They do this type thing for "student athletes".

Yeah, I saw a tweet of someone suggesting universities should open a course called "Fuck ICE 101", where students would be required to show up one time in the whole semester. That would be a great flex.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg (no pun intended). People like my brother are a lucky minority, but the atrocities ICE does with all immigrants are just heartbreaking. Foolish me thought their hateful policies would never affect my family, who is there lawfully, but I guess I never counted on them actually hating migration altogether, like @BjorgenFjorgen suggested.

The cruelty is the point.

If we don't reverse course on this, and QUICKLY, higher ed will die as we know it. Signed a PhD who works in academia.

@gouis isn't something like a quarter of university enrollment foreign visa students?

I don't know national numbers, and it varies wildly institution to institution. But what I do know is that the modern university is largely funded by international students coming and paying the full price (especially masters students).
