Try a few of their albums - Merritt likes to change their sound pretty dramatically between albums. Get Lost, 69 Love Songs and Distortion all sound pretty different, for example.

Cheers! I’ll give those suggestions a stream commenting this week and see what it think. Just one of those names that I keep hearing good things about but never actually got around to digging into!

69 Love Songs is one of those classic albums everyone should try at least once. It's daunting.. 69 songs... and it's a little all over the place, but it has a lot of really excellent tunes.

So how many slabs of vinyl is that hahaha! I actually have a 3 hour drive across the country on Friday, that sounds like an ideal accompaniment!

The songs are quite short, it clocks in at about an hour, I think. I've got it on vinyl, it's a triple.

69 Love Songs is a 3 x 10” set, the others are normal length (except 50 Song Memoir, which is also a box).

I only know the song that has been the first dance for like three of the last four weddings I've been to, and was covered by Peter Gabriel, but it's a good-ass song.

The Book of Love @BjorgenFjorgen? Yeah I was just listening to that Peter Gabriel cover album, which is terrible btw, and it’s one of the few positives on there!

Yep, that's the one. I also like his Flume and My Body is a Cage, and Come Talk to Me and the Feist/Timber Timbre songs (obviously).

Poor Peter. Yes 69 Love Songs all the way. Some songs are intentionally throw away only to be followed by heartbreaking classics. There’s a good documentary on Stephin Merritt called Strange Powers. Worth a watch
