Didn't Bowie actually right this for them, if memory serves?

He did write it for them but that didn’t stop him recording his own version too, I have it on a best of album somewhere.

I believe he talks about that on the Storytellers album, that's what triggered the memory.

The first version I ever heard was from Bruce Dickinson

The Mott version is THE version. Bowie’s doesn’t compare. It’s Hunter’s ad libs etc. The Mott version is anthemic and era defining. And I’m saying that as a Bowie fan. I remember hearing the bootleg of Bowie’s version and thinking, he’s a genius giving this to Mott. A custom fit for them.

Bowie’s version only got an official release on RarestOneBowie so the Mott version is arguably the original.
