Like am I from a different multiverse from everyone else?

Don’t feel too bad. There may be some revisionist history here. Over the past few years, the vast majority of people that I mentioned John Prine to had never heard of him. (My 70 year old mother got defensive and said “I don’t know follow modern music as much as you” she lost that argument). Better late than never?

I didn't really get into singer songwriter music until about 2013 so up until that point I had no clue who he was and I consider myself really musically versed. Don't feel too bad.

Definitely not true that everyone knew who he was or appreciated him, but they should have!

He was well regarded by other singer songwriters, so there is a tremendous outpouring from them right now on social media. I think Dylan is the best songwriter ever, and when he passes there will be tons of tributes. But I don't think Dylan inspires warmth the way Prine did.

I knew oh him, but was surprised at how loved he actually was. I personally was much sadder about Bill Withers passing, and his death didn't seem to affect too many, other that a few times Lean on Me has been playing on the news.

Never knowingly listened to a Prine song. Realize now that an Alabama3 cover is on a CD I own and listened to.

I don't think it's that out there, you just happen to be active online with a lot of musically inclined people versed in different ish. I was raised covering Prine with my dad, and had the chance to meet him a few times over the years. he's one of those songwriters often called your favorite musician's favorite musician. his charm comes across his Fresh Air interview if you are piqued.

I would agree with you, but lots of "normies" on my twitter feed are also extolling his virtues

I've been meaning to post this here too. I like to think that I keep up with a lot of types of music but I had never heard of him until he was hospitalized with Covid ... And only from this forum.
