"Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea" is her most accessible album. If nothing on that album hooks you, it might not be in the cards. "To Bring You My Love" is my personal favorite album. The title track, 'Down By The Water', 'Long Snake Moan' and 'Meet Ze Monsta' are all favorites from that one.
Like a lot of more complex artists. I think PJ has evolved quite a bit over her catalog. I'd personally start from the beginning and work forward. If she's not your bag don't sweat it. I'm sure there are, like, millions and millions of people whom she doesn't do it for.
I think I’ll start on Stories From The City and go back to her older stuff, @Aron. From listening to clips here and there from that album, I love the guitars.
She's REALLY big on changing things up from album to album. Those changes can be production, instrumentation, style or tone. Or all of them at one time. It gets really noticeable from "To Bring You My Love" up through "Let England Shake".
And just cuz the performance is badass and sexy, here she is performing 'I Wanna Make It Wit Chu' with Josh Homme. She's on the Desert Sessions version, which is aces.
@Yer Ol' Uncle D i feel like I haven’t given her a proper chance. When I feel like something I want to listen to automatically sounds like something I’ve not heard or like at first, I usually give their whole discography a listen and judge from there. Just haven’t. Chronological seems best.
@Sonicpharmacist I feel like I should have liked her or have her a shot a long time ago but, was never on my radar before tonight. For some reason, it struck me when I saw a copy of Bring Your Love to Me for sale. I knew I had to dive in.
Those early records remind me of my college years, so I'm really partial to them. "Dry" is another favorite. That original trio had a really interesting sound. Almost jazzy in places. "Rid of Me" has always been a little spotty for me, but it has some terrific songs. "Is This Desire?" &the albums she did with John Parish are more experimental. "White Chalk" sounds like it's from a completely different artist.
That's the primer playlist. I have one that is three times as long for those times when I need a deeper dive. Sorry for all the water wordplay. Totally unintended. Sorta.
