The Technics Turntable Fan Club - Questions, Advice, Discussion

Manufacturing requires wide infrastructure (water utilities, electricity, transportation) which is extremely difficult to “set up overnight” on uninhabited islands without a labor force.
My main point is that moving somewhere else outside of the US, including somewhere with zero infrastructure, still might actually be cheaper than the countries with larger tariffs AND cheaper than setting up shop in the US.

Infrastructure and workforce are two things that you can’t really do without if you’re wanting to do anything on a large enough scale.

We’re just going to see rampant inflation.

In the 1970’s, we had this sh*t called “stagflation” - when high interest rates, low growth and high unemployment made an unholy love triangle. Economists invented a misery index to tell us how bad things had gotten.

The last time I heard of stagflation was in Economics 101 more than 30 years ago. Now, it’s trending.

I got back into CD audio as a palliative during the Great Recession. Vinyl relieved stress during the COVID pandemic.

Hope you all have your preferred tables already to ride out the sh*t storm. Finding something of beauty and great functionality is a balm.

Definitely considering front loading DAC and cart purchases I was considering for later in the year to avoid these potential tariff driven price increases.

My speaker upgrade options are narrowed down to Klipsch, Zu, and smaller builders. I wonder how much tariffs on parts will affect them?

Klipsch Heritage are built in the US, but I think the drivers/crossovers use imported parts, so I expect their price to increase a bit.

I'd expect the price to increase more than the tariffs on imported electronic parts. The US heavily imports MDF, which is the primary material used to manufacture Klipsch speaker cabinets. South America has become a dominant supplier, with Chile overtaking Canada as the largest foreign MDF supplier to the U.S. The administration imposed a 10% baseline tariff on imports from Chile.

Because Klipsch exports are likely to decline, I'd also expect price increases to maintain cash flow and profitability.

Yeah I really had no intention of buying a pair of Klipsch Fortes IVs this week. Like, none. Was really hoping to wait on this. But Canada's counter tariffs include US speakers. So that's 25% extra on anything that isn't already on Canadian soil. These have been on my list for a long time but there is zero chance I buy them at a 25% premium so with only 3 pair in Ontario in Walnut currently... it forced my hand.

Looks like luxury durable goods will get a boost this month as affluent buyers try to get ahead of tariffs. Mather bought lovely walnut Forte IV speakers and all I got was a cheap Swiss watch!

It's happening with some consumables, like wine, too. Edit: I admit to buying a case of French Vouvray.

Yeah I think there will be a quick hit of purchases to try to get under the wire before everyone kinda cools off on big stuff. Thankfully this is pretty much it for quite a while for me on components. Just need some small stuff like a media rack and some speaker cables etc going forward. Pretty much have everything in place for the foreseeable future at this point.

The walnut Fortes should match the VPI Classic nicely!
Yeah it'll work in either spot. Honestly I wanted the Cherry but they discontinued it and I didn't want to hold out to find a used pair. I really can't believe of all the colours that's the one they decided to drop.

Ha ha! I just got an ad from Audio Advisor saying:

"Beat Tariff Pricing! If you've been thinking about leveling up your setup, place your order now before prices go up from tariffs"

Haha I haven't yet gotten one of those but I think stores are scrambling. When I inquired about the Forte IV the store immediately offered me 25% off list. Which equals only about $4000 usd total. That's crazy cheap up here for that speaker.

And this one on WSJ.com...

"Apple Users Rush to Upgrade iPhones Ahead of Potential Tariffs-Related Price Hikes: Customers said they aren’t waiting to see if iPhone costs increase."

Thinking about offloading the KAB fluid damper. I'm gonna take a long break from it at least and maybe give it one more install but I think whatever changes it may make come with some dulling elsewhere that I don't love. Anyone here a recovering fluid dampaholic?

Raises hand! Yes.

I was using a 1500C with the damper. Your description seems fairly spot on with my experience. I sold that turntable recently (was not thrilled with the auto arm lifting/cheap feeling tonearm lift).

So I bought a 1200M7B (I'm an orange fan, and they've been clearing those out). I put the damper on that instead, and found it was doing the same thing. Regardless of how much fluid I ran, I felt like I lost some soundstage, and most of the excitement from the presentation.

So I think I've come to the conclusion that unless I need it to compensate for a cartridge that is a bad fit for the arm, I don't like what I does to my table. The table I run is lower level than yours, but I think it's a good enough table that it can run some pretty nice cartridges without the use of the damper.
