N&G AoTM /// Vol. 57 - March 2024 /// Steely Dan - Can’t Buy a Thrill

Bought ready to pull a @Joe Mac and ask y’all to show your work. There’s some hoops that had to be jumped here that boggle my mind.
Look, I only have a handful of clues that would work the rest don’t understand their relevance so I am just spitballing.

Neil released this album in November of 1972 he’s a Canadian/Friend of Joni, there are some “Black Riders” on the cover of the album.

But it’s not a debut record.

  1. 672 = no idea!
  2. 320 = umm... there are nearly 320 versions of this album (317, according to the 'cogs) and a lot of German issues of Dan albums have a catalogue number that ends in 320?
  3. Large Professor's "Love Wit U" sampled The Dan's "The Fez"
  4. Buddha = The Dan have a song called "Bodhisattvas"
  5. Debut album ✅
  6. Black Rider = stumped.
  7. Steely Dan also has songs about money; See: "Cash Only Island" and "Take My Money"
  8. @TenderLovingKiller® is a Dan Fan
  9. 285 = iunno!
  10. Max Planck is an originator of Quantum Theory, and the fact that a recent book diving into Steely Dan lyrics is called Quantum Criminals leads me to believe there's a connection here...
  11. Fishing Rod = "Reelin' In The Years"
  12. Red Lipstick features prominently on the cover
  13. ...this seems perhaps like an allusion to The Nightfly - Donald Fagen's solo album. And/or to the bug on the cover of Katy Lied.
  14. Sex and Violence = Not sure the link to BDP or KRS-One, but Fagen was arrested for domestic assault in 2016
  15. @Joe Mac is NOT a Dan Fan!
  16. 236 = beats me!
  17. dunno
  18. "Change of the Guard" is also a Dan song
  19. The Dan covered Joni's song "Carey" and Joni is a fan of The Dan - particularly Gaucho.
  20. Perhaps a reference to "Sail the Waterway," but I'd like to believe this clue is in reference to Guy DiRito's Popeye-inspired Dan parody "Wimpy Just Wants A Burger"
  21. 1972 = The year this was released.
