Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

Totally. I mean, I get that on one hand they are a business and they need to pick the ones they can sell easiest, but on the other hand they are a business built on curating titles that you wouldn't necessarily pick on your own.

And as someone mentioned on reddit: Storf says that Rainbo has the deal with Prestige to press these titles, but back when Saxophone Colossus came out he said it was pressed by RTI. This was a major factor in many people deciding to go with it. So, which is it? Does anyone who has a copy know for sure? Is this just more of Storf not knowing what he's talking about with mastering/pressing details?
If it's pressed by Rainbo I will be getting my money back.

Lol, what "deal" could Rainbo possibly have with Prestige other than the fact that they have plates that aren't worn out and Prestige doesn't feel like doing anything else? I get it though, it's more like a Newbury Comics model for some of these releases, in that they commission the label to manufacture, vs guiding and spec-ing the manufacturing on the label's behalf. Sometimes you get lucky, like when the label is already using a good master and good plant (like Comet is Coming) and sometimes you get Rainbow lol.

IMO these exclusives VMP are a big waste of money. Even if VMP does the manufacturing it's always just a GZ job. I was looking at that Jolene but I think I would be better served by the MOV reissue if I wanted a new copy.

What's in the deadwax?
Okay actually I'm wrong, he never said it was Kevin Gray, so really we don't know because there has been two different recent reissues, one is Kevin Gray, one isn't. And the one that isn't was pressed for Newbury. Sooooo, that doesn't bode well. I'm going to try to get confirmation tomorrow. If this isn't the KG plates I'm cancelling.

EDIT: ACTUALLY this is a weird one, the Newbury press has Kevin Gray and Hoffman in the deadwax but it's scratched out, so these could all be coming from the AP plates that they did in 2013. I'm confused but both mono represses by Prestige after AP did theirs have KG in the deadwax... One scratched out, one not... Sooo, I suppose that's good...

I think it's likely to be the KG/SH mastering but the pressing plant is in question. If you decide to cancel I have an extra one of this pressing I've been meaning to PIF.

Just found this on Hoffman for what it's worth... So RTI would make sense if this is correct about the Newbury teal pressing...

Same thing happened with some of the CCR NC pressings too. Also similar to how VMP used MoFi and KG plates on the past. Essentially you’re dealing with the upswing of using what is lying around at a pressing plant lol.

Nice to know it looks like the Sonny Rollins exclusive will be pressed at RTI and is a Kevin Gray remaster!

I know these Prestige titles aren’t anything special like the Blue Note 45RPM 2LP/Anthology titles, but I’m looking really forward to them! I don’t think it’s a waste of VMP. To me, those exclusives that Secretly Society do (Shura, Alex Cameron, Angel Olsen, Whitney etc) are more of a waste. Plus, knowing we are getting some good-looking variants of some amazing jazz albums + high quality mastering/pressing treatment is always a great thing 😊

The Prestige titles are such a let down compared to how well they did with the 4 Blue Notes. Those really set the bar high. With the Prestige titles, they didn't need to 2x albums at 45, but just put a little more care in it. These just feel like, "hey what titles do you have lying around that we can quickly shill to the rubes?"

I 100% agree that the Prestige variants are a let down compared to the Blue Note exclusives, but I really don't think it's was purposefully malicious on VMPs end. While I am circumspect of VMP in general, I think it's probably as Storf said, Prestige asked if they wanted to do some variants and VMP said yes, vs. the Blue Note exclusives where they were trying to create a positive relationship with a label (and audiophile customers). Tbh, I think they may end up having the Dolphy title around for a while, but who knows...

[EDITED to reflect Storf's update] And while Saxophone Colossus being pressed at RTI vs. these 2 at Rainbo is a piss off, Storf has never seemed very concerned with lineage or fidelity of records, so I don't know that where albums are pressed matters to him other than it matters to some VMP customers.

Yeah I agree it isn't really a waste for VMP to have chosen the titles they did, just a missed opportunity. I wouldn't expect anyone not as narrowly focused on jazz records like I am to care quite so much about a lot of the jazz choices they make. Jazz makes up 95% of my collection so I'm very picky.

I'm very picky about where the albums I purchase are pressed. If it's Rainbo or United, 99/100 I don't purchase because their records are so shitty. It's why I never buy Jagjaguar even though they have some amazing artists, IMHO most notably S Carey.
Looking on Discogs, it seems like the Etta Jones album is pressed at GZ for the European pressing and Rainbo for the US pressing. For those interested, the EU pressing should be much higher quality

To be fair, I really think Rainbo has been getting significantly better. At least in my experience in the past few years with records pressed there. But yeah I don’t blame VMP for picking these titles but it’s definitely a missed opportunity to explore the Prestige catalog.

Ugh, I was done with VMP, but I can't pass on this Bad Bunny record. People around me think I'm joking when I say this, but I think he is one of the most unique artists to come out of Latin America in the last few decades. He is a true revolutionary, doing things no other reggaeton or "urbano" artist would even think of doing.

I guess this will stick around past the "members only" window, right? I don't want to give VMP any more money.
