Definitive Audiophile pressings

Oh cogs... 100% seller

"Jacket rated NM. (Except for tiny 1 mm hole.)"

Okay but THAT'S NOT NM ANYMORE BRO DUE TO THE HOLE AND ALSO THE OTHER HOLE YOU DIDN'T MENTION.

I didn't buy this, he sent me the photos, but what is it with the whole "NM except for..." routine.
IT'S VG +/ VG THEN, GUY.

I appreciate these periodic posts about discogs experiences because it makes it real easy to not hit the buy button on any of the ~100 items I have on my want list.
There’s a local seller who I’ve bought from at shows who I also follow on Discogs and it’s very interesting to see the difference when they’re grading. They had an Alice Coltrane - Ptah at the last show, 1972 repress, that I looked at and passed on because it was VG at best. Not cleaned, lots of scuffs and cover had the typical ringwear often found on that cover.

Saw that he listed it on Discogs soon after and the description was not at all what I would have graded it. Describes it as “VG+ but close to NM.” I wouldn’t have even given it a VG+. And he’s asking double the average price…

I rarely buy anything used from Discogs without asking for several photos at this point. It’s too risky IMO.

Yeah it's so hard, I'm messaging 4 different guys about this pressing right now. 3 are 100% and one is 99.8%. The guy above play tested and said it sounds perfect, but how do I trust that play test with that jacket grading? Other guy says it's perfect but hasn't listened to it. Another one says only noise between tracks. Okay or is it everywhere and you're only hearing it between tracks, and 4th guy says came from super picky audiophile so likely played once or never but hasn't listened. And all 4 are on the high end price wise. Oh and also 3 of the 4 have that same hole punch but they're all rated NM.

I'm honestly leaning towards the super picky audiophile guy... At least he knows where it came from.

Might be worth the hail Mary. He works for tough gong?
I think he works at Tuff gong? The whole experience was strange. But they were selling the UHQRs because contractually only AS and Bob marleys site were allowed to sell them.

Seems to be a manager at their distribution office if linked in is correct. This is the email address: sales@tuffgongmusic.com

I really dislike the hard panning on the Coltranes so i never find myself reaching for them. I know that's not RKS' fault really though. And they are definitely from copies. Chad got mad and defensive when people asked him what tapes they were from and he refused to answer.
That's because he has a "MoFi problem" with some of his titles and he doesn't want to have to admit it.

Anyone get noise toward the last quarter of Side B on the MoFi “In A Silent Way”?

My copy looks fine but is getting about a minute of constant ticking in the second half of that side, even after two ultrasonic cleanings.

Going to contact MD to see it they can offer a replacement but still waiting to hear back from the about the Jack Johnson jacket too 🙄

Wouldn’t be shocked to be honest. There are already a few AP titles that were advertised as AAA and then walked back to say they were from digital.
And it’s so silly, right? MoFi’s scandal has proven that digitally sourced doesn’t scare away folks who trust their ears, and trust a good mastering engineer will do their job. Just be up front! Analog isn’t a magic bullet. Plenty of tape errors in AAA masters with stuff this old!

Yep and with so many tapes missing or destroyed or in tatters making the best possible digital backup is just good archival practice at this stage.

I'm going to give him a call. Can't hurt to ask. Maybe there's one laying around.

Wasn't looking to buy a Japan 1983 copy of Coltrane Ascension (Edition I) on eBay. But I had one in my watch list, 'cause ya know...sometimes I wanna see how these things go.

Seller was asking $50 for EX condition media and jacket. Pics looked good, OBI/insert incl, and seller has good FB. Again, not looking to buy but get one of those seller offers that they send to everyone watching for $39. Still not interested. Not cause I didn't think it was a fair price but already have the music and it's not an album I burn for.

But I was allowed to make counteroffers. So I launched a funk it price of $25 fully not caring if it wasn't accepted. It was.

Aight. Let's go.

Also, seller in US so no crazy shipping price.

Have the same issue here. Contacted MD this morning.

Or just wait it out a little longer...
