Must-have rare groove from the Hawaiian Islands.

The first recording from Mackey Feary’s solo effort — created after Feary's departure from Kalapana, the seminal 1970s group that shaped the sound of contemporary Hawaii. The group's debut LP finds Feary and his counterparts weaving jazz, soul, rock, and groove into a style that all Mackey's own.

The album reads as a who’s who in the local 70s music scene: Nohelani Cypriano (of “Lihue” cult fame), Azure McCall (of Lemuria), Jimmy Funai (who produced Hal Bradbury’s debut), and Gaylord Holomalia.

This official Aloha Got Soul reissue, licensed from Mackey's son, Sebastian Feary, has been meticulously restored and remastered to sound the absolute best it ever has.

This reissue also includes the full version of "Powerslide" in its 7-minute and 20-second glory.

Notes from Roger Bong of Aloha Got Soul:
"This is the record that started it all for me. I heard “A Million Stars” in high school, fell in love with the song, but that was that. Four years later, I heard it again. This time in a DJ Muro "Hawaiian Breaks" mixtape. All these memories came pouring back. But Muro didn't provide a tracklist (hah! ironic...). I made it my mission to unearth the remaining tracks on Muro's mix, which is how AGS started. Now, 11 years later I'm officially reissuing the album that changed my life." ​

In the email that included this link from Tower Records (see image below), they're marketing this as a 50th anniversary edition of Joni Mitchell's Blue. This coincides with previous announcements of Joni's box set containing remasters of her first four albums, which noted that this was to celebrate Blue's 50th anniversary. All of which suggests that what Tower is offering is a breakout from the box set of the newly (?) remastered Blue. I sure wish there was more information available about whether and how this might differ from the 2007/2020 Rhino reissue that was lacquered by Boom Boom (and that I saw yesterday for $110 behind the counter at my local--they've really lost their fucking minds). And perhaps most interesting of all is that this doesn't appear to be a pre-order given there's no indication of a release date. It's all a bit confusing.

Just go for the Boom Boom remaster. It’s been restocked at a lot of places lately for $25ish and sounds amazing.

I don't mean to knock Needlejuice, their pressing is as good as 99% of the variants out there and this one looks pretty cool. but the Aural Pleasure variant, which Newbury did previously, is the definitely the best Polygondwanaland pressing I have heard.
