I agree with most of what you said. But why put the 4,000 number on it to begin with then? I get that it was only up for 30 or so minutes, but it was long enough for people to question it and 30 min for such a huge, critically acclaimed release when the other album variants were sold out in most other places is a pretty long time. The part that bothers me is that they pushed it as being exclusive to members only for 48 hours and I saw quite a few people sign up to buy it after worrying it would sell out. I just don't think they are ever really forthcoming with information about their pressings, or when they are it ends up being a miscommunication inside VMP (like with Still Woozy being announced as a member exclusive but then not actually being one).
In one of my emails with CS that went unanswered, I told them about the workaround for Fiona and said they should maybe fix it if these things are meant to be member exclusives. But at the end of the day, VMP doesn't care because it sells. It's why they also don't care that people like that Vinceron seller buys 80+ copies of every ROTM and they haven't shut it down.
Exactly.
And again, I'm not "faulting" them for doing it, and it seems clear that they turned course and tried to delete that info, specifically so that they could do that. But there is still the wording where they flatly claim that the initial pressing is 4k while stating "there is always a chance" that they repress it. That seems misleading at best. Then there's also the question of what the point is in making it only available to members for 48hrs. The implication is that it could sell out if you're not a member, but any stock left would become available after that window. Otherwise, what would the benefit be to have 2 days to place an order for an unnumbered pressing that comes out in months, along with everyone else's anyway? The reason that's disingenuous is because, even if it had sold out, they'd just add more and increase the pressing, anyway.
Like I said, it's playing 2 different angles. The let's just open it to everyone approach seems less limited, like with Idler Wheel and Mariah, or whatever. Then they have the other foot in the members only exclusive color variant framing. It's just bizarre.
Whatever the reason was that motivated anyone to pick this up, and pick it up when they did, that individual will likely evaluate whether that reasoning holds up and pans out in the end. In the future, I feel like those things always become factors and often end up becoming deterrents down the line. Some just like the color better and are happy. Others might have simply waited to buy it at a more convenient time. Everyone is different.
I'm not saying they broke any rules, but I am saying that I believe they jump the shark a lot and people remember that type of shit. It's the same reason that I'm leery of ordering exclusives from Sacred Bones these days, after releases like Plantasia had a million-and-six slightly different variants and associated merch continue to roll out.
The truth is that I've become genuinely fascinated with VMP's choices, because they are so often so counterintuitive -- if not counterproductive -- and the internet provides a space to witness both immediate and delayed reactions to those decisions.
Last month, it was expressly promised in an email that the glitch in their system was permanently fixed so that there was absolutely no chance swaps could oversell in the same way. They create so many unneccessary problems for themselves that just come back to bite them in one way or another.
