Rock, Alt-Rock, Indie Rock, Psych Rock, Shoegaze, Punk, Noise Rock, Emocore, etc.

These days I gravitate a bit more to true small independent labels and artists for rock vs "indie" labels (Sub Pop has a fucking corporate jet now) than I did earlier in the decade where most of the "must hear" albums were rock.

One relatively unsung BandCamp label is PNKSLM from Stockholm, who focuses on garage-ish music. I think Sweden has always had a decently strong association with garage revival acts from the early ones like The Creeps to the most famous sons, The Hives, but the stuff from this label feels less revivalist which I think is for the better. My favorite artist on their roster is ShitKid, who specializes in oddball punkish rock, but secretly has an amazing ear for hooks. Some tracks / visuals below.

Ok, I'm going to cover the "Dad Rock" Classic rock angle and hopefully bring something new to your ears for consideration :)

We'll start simple - Thin Lizzy ‎– Jailbreak Released in 1976, a bit scarce in the wild, but some really good stuff here if you happen to come across a copy.
Shameless YouTube Channel plug :)

A 90s punk album that is still in rotation for me, thanks to how perfect it is for running, is the Impossibles' Return and their final EP, 4_Song_Brick_Bomb. After starting as a ska band (who didn't back then?), these last two releases showed them heading in a more mature direction, with melodies and emotion for days.

Their post-Impossibles Slowreader album is my favorite thing Rory and that crew ever did.

One of my favourite bands, Cave In, have just released what seems like it'll be their final album, Final Transmission, after their long-time bassist Caleb Scofield passed away in a car accident.

It's spacey and dark, and has the classic Cave In tone. It's also softer than their usual abrasive, noisy sound, but has a melancholic sense of heaviness. I think I'll be spending a lot of time with this.

This looks interesting, thanks for highlighting them and the label.

So what are you listening to and what recommendations do you have? There have been some great ones the past few days and would like to hear more.
I am enjoying The Coathangers "The Devil You Know" on Suicide Squeeze:

And the new Amyl and the Sniffers on ATO:

Saw Amyl open up for King Gizzard last year, great energy, still need to check out the album. Keep an eye out for Stonefields new one on Friday (Next Flightless release, Gizzard/Amyl’s label).

Haven’t brought these guys up here though I know I’ve chatted with @sorcerer about them! One of my most played releases this year is the new Clowns on Fat Wreck Chords.

On the psych rock end anything King Gizzard puts out, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets as well. Newest find is these guys, Frankie and the Witch Fingers!

So the first song off this album appeared as a single on my Discover Weekly last year and def stayed in rotation for a long while. It's very Pavement-esque slacker rock. I just searched them today to find they had a full album come out in March.

I like it.

The new LP from The Gotobeds is excellent - features guest appearances from members of Protomartyr, Pavement, Shellac, Mission of Burma, Silkworm, Downtown Boys + more.

Also really enjoying Institute's new album Readjusting the Locks:

Introducing 'Unknown Pleasures: Reimagined'. A project that will see 10 directors create new music videos for every track on Unknown Pleasures to celebrate the album's 40th anniversary. First video coming this Thursday.

YouTube will also host a premiere event in London on 21st June for a selection of these videos, featuring a panel between Stephen Morris, @everittmatt, @orianw, Feargal Ward and Adrian Duncan. 25 pairs of tickets are available for fans and you can sign up to enter on Facebook and Twitter. #UnknownPleasures40
This is a pretty cool idea.

Do not like the first video although the cinematography is pretty awesome.

New TFS incoming on Flightless, apparently, 8/23/19.

Tropical Fuck Storm - Braindrops

Listening to Braindrops is a jarring and exhilarating experience, full of pulsating grooves, black humour, dissonant experimentation, and unsettling dystopian plot-lines. Braindrops is an unrelenting work, from an unrelenting musical ensemble. “Tropical Fuck Storm is a full-onthing,” Liddiard offers. “Everything we do, we do it to death.”

New track released is Paradise:

Looks like the track list includes a song they released on 7" a while back too.
