Ages and Ages "Me You They We"

*The best way to support the band is to purchase the pink vinyl from Bandcamp. I've subsidized the international shipping costs for anyone outside the US who wants to buy the album, so it should be affordably priced for anyone who is interested (but that only works with the pink vinyl). Their old record label has the black copies, and they didn't respond to me when I reached out to them to ask about how many copies they had (when I was trying to get everything organized for this AOTM thread), so I wasn't able to work out any kind of shipping deals with them on the black vinyl.

-Why I Picked This Album-

I don't have any fancy answer - this band and this album just represent a lot of what I love about music in general. Their sneakily ambitious song arrangements have lots of vocal layers and instrumentation, but what could sound really busy and chaotic all fits together in a beautiful and clear way and often produces an effect that's more than the sum of its parts (even though there are a lot of parts!). In a lot of ways, it would probably be simpler and easier to just have one singer and one guitarist and one percussionist, but they're not trying to take the easy way out. It reminds me of my favorite songs and albums from the sixties when bands used a whole Wrecking Crew/Funk Brothers-type of backing band to create a symphonic saturation of lavishly varied sounds to showcase the melodies and choruses. The financial constraints of paying that many musicians to rehearse and record (let alone tour) seem to have killed off that sound. When I listen to this band, it feels like they're giving it all that they have to do that kind of thing because they love what they're doing.

Ages and Ages is representative to me of so many bands in Portland that seem to put all of their energy into making the best music that they can, regardless of cost or marketability. They're not trying to make a lot of money or become famous by whipping up controversy on social media. Their focus is solely on creating songs that they want to live with and share with others - they let their music speak for itself. They should be a lot more famous than they are, but they're not as focused as many of their peers on building a brand or cultivating a following. You could call it idealistic or naive, or both, but you can't question their commitment. After working with some independent labels, they've now chosen to exist against the grain of the machinery of the music and culture industrial complex and enjoy total artistic freedom instead of the exposure (and smoke machines and fancy light shows, haha!) that a record label could provide. The only person on their end that's responded to me is the lead singer, Tim Perry, who told me via e-mail that they recorded "Me You They We" on their own in a basement, which, "took a while, but we did it on our own terms and had the chance to explore and try new things."

They're currently working on a new record. Tim says, "I feel like our musical tastes continue to branch out and evolve because we're humans who grow and change and music is there for us to work through these things. But I think what ties all of these albums together is a thread of hope and inclusion and celebration amidst a troubling and confusing world. I like the challenge of exploring these ideas, but using Ages as a channel to come out with a glass that's half full - or at least fun to drink? As I said previously, we're our own label now - so no advances to cover the expenses of making this next record. We're doing it from our own pockets and with money we make from selling pink vinyl (and other things), so please let everyone know how grateful we are for their interest and support."

Rules

1. Each player gets one and only one guess at the AOTM (unless I change my mind). You must identify your official guess as your "AOTM guess: [artist and album]". Feel free to throw out as many ideas as you'd like and brainstorm together, unofficially, though.
2. There will be clues that point to the AOTM, but I won't be giving them out directly.
3. I will give a riddle that will help you identify a song. I will confirm once the song has been correctly identified. All of the songs will be songs that I love, by artists that I love, and, in that sense, are somewhat indicative of the type of artist and album that I've chosen as the AOTM. There is no limit on how many times each player can guess to identify a song - any mention of the correct song in a post in this thread will count as an official guess and will be confirmed ASAP. But the main purpose of the songs is to identify the actual clues that point to the AOTM.
4. I will continue to give riddles for new songs until someone has correctly identified the common element across that group of songs which is itself an actual clue to the AOTM. I will confirm once the clue has been correctly identified - again, any mention of the correct meaning of the clue is sufficient and there is no limit on how many guesses you may submit. After a clue is correctly identified, I will give a series of riddles that point to a group of songs which will point to the next clue.
5. We will continue in this fashion - riddles pointing to songs whose similarity functions as the clue to the AOTM - until someone explicitly uses their "AOTM guess" to correctly identify the AOTM. I will confirm once someone has used their "AOTM guess" to correctly identify the AOTM. That person will win a free copy of the AOTM.

DON'T THREATEN ME!!!!

I guess:

The artist just responded to my e-mail! I asked them to confirm if they had a least 30 copies of the record in stock.

They said:

Eric, thanks for the heads up!

And also, this is so cool! We're truly honored and excited. Needles and Grooves sounds super fun.

More info to come, but for now I just wanted to let you know that...we definitely have more than 30 - but we are getting down to the end. It's around sixty total. So it would be thrilling to see many, most, or all of them go in this fashion.

Again, thanks so much for contacting us and choosing this record. Means a lot :)

[Artist's name redacted]

So the AOTM is an album by Artist's Name Redacted (funny name for a band). With this information it shouldn't be hard to find the AOTM.

using my investigative skills I believe we can comfortably add:
at least one of the members of the band "artist's name redacted" speaks English and is alive.
That should narrow it further.

Great catch! And he says "we" so it's either a band or a duo or a trio or a quatuor or a... We also know they are kind and polite. Could be Bloc Party.

You know how it's really hard not to laugh precisely in moments where you're aware of how inappropriate it would be to laugh?

Or like if you're near the edge of the roof of a tall building and it's suddenly really hard not to think about "OMG what if I dropped my phone over the edge right now? or my wallet?" and you're kind of surprised by how strong the impulse is to embrace chaos?

That's how I'm feeling about just wanting to blurt out the record and ruin the surprise for this guess thread (and all the hints and clues that I've come up with so far) haha. Why do I find recklessness so tempting?

PRACTICE LEVEL:

Hint #1 - a group of Russian revolutionaries with a fondness for the last month of the year sings this tripartite song about a landmass surrounded by water, with an especially grim third act [starting in the ninth minute] about underwater expiration
