Political Discussion

True, i should have said its hard to fight stupid, but also sometimes its not worth it.

This is a person who I worked with several years ago and while we disagreed with politics, six years ago there wasn't a political party who openly ran on a platform of white supremacy. Now she is retired and lives alone in the country, so I didn't let her spout stupid shit to me but changing her mind is a low priority.
Oh yeah, I definitely didn't meant to disagree. You can't fight stupidity by treating it on an individual basis. None of us have the energy or wisdom or patience or authority to be successful at that. We have a widespread cultural problem that is creating stupidity, and that, I think we can fight.

Pence and the Coronavirus Task force have walked back on guidelines to opening schools in the fall after Trump blasted them. The guidelines were too stringent. Also, the Trump administration plans to hold back federal funding to any school or state who do not follow the guidelines (take more caution). This will likely defund education in blue states disproportionately to red states.

ugh...."because kids can't get the virus"

What happened in these camps is going to happen in the schools.

Why is it so hard for these ass hats to see beyond the individual? We seem to not be grasping that the spread is a bigger problem, meaning carriers bringing it to others, and so on, and so on. I'm anticipating a knock down, drag out with our school district very soon. They sent out a survey to see what parents are feeling, but I'm sure pressures from every end will come into play.

The cost of living in this country is insane.

Just read a twitter thread (private account so I am not going to link it here) from a 20 something girl in the Boston area who landed a great job out of college. When covid hit her company laid off 20% of their employees in a last in first out fashion back in March. Since she didn't have the seniority of a lot of her coworkers who had been there 10+ years she was on the cutting block.

She lives in a 3 bedroom apartment with 2 roommates in Southie (Souther neighborhoods of Boston, cheaper than the North End or Seaport District). Even with splitting the rend 3 ways, she still has to pay a little over $1600 a month.

Of course no companies are hiring right now and many still turning furloughs into permanent layoffs at this time in this area. So she has yet to be able to land a decent paying job.

She was able to get a minimum wage part time job at a grocery store right away. One of the few essential jobs hiring people during March / April. However, due to conflict of interest policies, she was not able to get a second job at a different grocery store chain. You can't also work for the competitor.

The grocery store wages weren't nearly enough to pay for rent. So she quickly blew through her savings and has nothing left now. As things started opening back up she got 2 more part time jobs. She now has a total of 3 jobs, and works between 10 and 16 hours every day and hasn't had a day off in 3 weeks now just to cover rent.

Sure she would have been better off financially not taking that job at the grocery store and getting the expanded unemployment. But that's not her, she has to stay busy and does like the idea of being unemployed and feels uncomfortable collecting benefits.

My father sent me a video clip of a Cuban American immigrant, who immigrated to the United States in 1961 when he was in his early 20's sitting at the table in the White House with Donald Trump talking about the Defund Police movement.

This guy fully was backing Donald Trump and was calling for the young people in this country to wake up. His views were that the young peoples push for Socialism will destroy our country and the American Dream. Because Socialism is Communism and what we are asking for with defunding police is exactly what Fidel Castro did in Cuba and if we go down that path we will have the same economic impacts Cuba did under Fidel Castro's rule. We need to learn from the past and use that information to make a better future.

The caption of the video was "How is this video not everywhere? It needs to be."

I called my father out on this Bull Shit asking him why isn't all of Europe or Canada Communist if the logical conclusion is socialism is a push for Communism. Also, that 99.9% of people are not calling for the elimination of the police with the defund the police movement (Fidel Castro got rid of the police). They are calling for drug addiction to be treated differently, as a health issue and funding use for treatment rather than policing and jailing. I also called out that we have the worse healthcare system in the developed world and we should be ashamed of ourselves. The only way to fix it would be a little bit of socialism. Our healthcare system is for the wealthy, or by pay their way to the top of the waitlist and get the best doctors while the average joe is buried in debt or the cost of healthcare are prohibitory of getting the care they need.

This is how my father responded to the above:

Edit: He's still going on and added this to:

The EU and Canada are part of the globalist view of one world power and government. It is currently failing from within. Socialism is they way they consolidate their power structure. WW2 never really ended. Many of the NAZI power structure and scientists were absorbed into the democrat controlled US government and business. See operations paper clip. The CIA & NASA were predominantly Germany and created after the war. It was and still is the movement toward globalism/Socialism/communism run by the rich elites of the world. They control structure is slowly being exposed...> Maxwell arrest in NH. follow those developments. ¿

What do you mean Fidel got rid of the Police? What is the National Revolutionary Police Force then? I think many people would call Cuba a police state.

I wasn't aware that we Canadians were such Machiavellian schemers with global domination aspirations. You will all take our health care for all and make apologies for everything first, even if you're not sure you did anything wrong, damn it. And end all your sentences with eh, eh.

That's what the guy in the video said. I have no idea, ask him.

Maybe he means that Fidel disbanded Batista's police force and military to form his own.

Comparing a dictator's promises and actions to people demanding change from their government is an incredibly bad faith argument. Never mind the fact that Cuba never "got rid of their police," they just changed the guard to one that supported the new dictator.

I saw a report on the local news that rent in the Boston area is up 10% between January 1st and June 30th of this year. One of the contributing factors was the stay at home order, renters were a captured audience not looking to move and more willing to accept a higher rent rate.

Just heard my apartment complex is going to be aggressively pushing to renovate all units over the next 4 years. If I'm still hear that long I will be forced to to change units so they can renovate mine. Which was just renovated 5 years ago right before I moved in. It was done in year 3 of the previous 4year renovation cycle.

During the previous renovation cycle, which was the first renovation to my complex since they were built in 2004, they painted the walls a beige color instead of white, replaced the the Stove, Refrigerator and Dishwasher with newer more feature rich units and replaced the kitchen and bathroom floor linoleum with vinyl hard wood looking flooring. These renovations resulted in 2 consecutive years of 10% rent increases before I moved in. Many of the current residence who were living here when I moved in were bailing / leaving because rent went up too much. Many of them complaining they could not find anything in Salem with a better rate and had to move elsewhere.

The latest set of renovations is replacing the kitchen countertop with granite, replacing the kitchen sink, replacing the washer and dryer with new more advanced units, replacing the carpeting, replacing the furnace and central AC units. They also are updating the thermostat and lighting to be smart / Alexa connected.

To me that sounds like a huge increase in rent is coming over the next few years and will bring the place I'm living at in line with a lot of the newer developments that went up over the last 10 years that start at about $600 a month more than what I pay here.

They are doing the renovations to stay competitive. All new developments in Salem have been luxury for more than 10 years now targeting people who have incomes of 100k or more a year and many older complexes have remodeled.

I'm sure by competitive they mean being able to get top dollar and margins. Because they have absolutely zero issue filling units and renters would prefer the lower rates of $1800 a month over a one bedroom rather than $2400 a month many of the newer developments start at.

My pitch in the 2020 writers’ room:

It’s September. With the COVID death toll approaching 250,000 in the US and a wave of evictions and foreclosures (combined with confused and disastrous attempts to re-open schools) bringing unrest to the suburbs and exurbs, Biden’s national polling lead sits comfortably in double digits and is heading upward. A critical mass of battleground states are already out of reach for Trump, apparently by margins that would seem to render legal challenges to mail-in ballots or other allegations of tainted results ineffective. Trump is depressed and darkly angry rather than frantic, as the certainty that he is going to lose has finally set in. He is looking for a way out, but also preoccupied with concerns about the legal exposures he and his family will likely face upon his return to civilian life.

Then Ruth Bader Ginsburg dies and all hell breaks loose. McConnell vows to confirm a replacement before the election as liberals howl in anguish. However, on the right, the evangelicals let it be known that, after what they regard as this summer’s betrayals by Roberts and Gorsuch, they won’t accept another wolf in FedSoc clothing. They demand a true believer, but the corporate wing of the GOP judicial apparatus fears that nominating a culture war berserker will endanger the prospects of a quick confirmation (Collins is in serious trouble in Maine, with her vote for Kavanaugh continuing to loom large in effective attack ads).

The intra-right schism dominates Fox News as both sides try to appeal to Trump, but he remains sullen and distracted and refuses to come down on one side or the other. With precious days and weeks rolling by, finally a top level meeting is called in the Oval Office to determine a course of action once and for all. As the participants begin filing in, the CNN ticker on the giant television shows Biden with a 15 point national lead as a panel debates whether the inevitable Democratic Senate will launch investigations into the prior administration. Trump’s focus remains on the TVs as the people around him throw out names of potential nominees. Someone mentions Jerry Falwell, Jr., and an opponent scoffs that Falwell isn’t even a judge. A young aide interjects that, actually, there’s nothing requiring a Supreme Court nominee to be a judge, or actually even a lawyer at all - technically anyone could be nominated.

Trump’s attention is finally pulled from the TV, the rusty underused gears slowly beginning to turn is his head, as everyone else in the room stares fiery daggers at the young aide. “So you’re saying I can nominate anyone I want? Even...myself?”

Don’t put ideas like this into the universe!
After Bostock I became convinced that RBG will die before the election, as the resulting carnage - not just liberals vs. McConnel but wounded and angry evangelical activists vs. everyone else, plus Trump’s inevitable belief that the nominee should be a “game changer” rather than another anonymous lump of Federalist Society pancake batter - seems like the only way that this stupid year could really keep upping the ante.
