I'm a fan, but it's just alcohol. Very strong alcohol, but just alcohol. Any further property that's been attributed to it is a myth. Drink if you like anise and strong herbal flavors. Around 4:1 very cold water to absinthe. Ice (I prefer crushed) is optional. Drip water very slowly through sugar cube. Burning the sugar cube is a modern twist and not traditional at all and I'd just keep that for the cheap stuff.
