  • The Last Waltz concert took place 44 years ago today. Sound like as good a reason as any for another re-watch.

No worries. Did you happen to see that the entire set she recorded for that ACL performance is now available on Bandcamp for a limited time? I think it is available until sometime in January. She also has a different performance on streaming services called Live In Austin that is really good. She put out a lot of stuff this year, and is doing livestreams almost nightly.

I did bookmark her on Bandcamp to explore later...I will look for it!

Might not be the same with all the PBS stations across the country, but here in the Austin area they are re-airing the Jackie Venson/Mavis Staples episode of Austin City Limits in about 30 minutes. I highly recommend the episode, particularly the Jackie Venson half.
My copy of Oxford America's annual Southern Music issue arrived today. Always a very good read from cover to cover.

I ordered mine quite a while ago. I actually forgot about it, so it was a nice surprise today. They're calling this one "Greatest Hits" as it features some older pieces, and then newer material. There are 10 Spotify playlists that were curated from various contributors though, so I'm anxious to dive into those. Brittany Howard did one. Love these issues.

The first one of these I ever got was actually the 2nd one they did. They used to have accompanying CDs, and that particular issue had an alternate take of a new R.E.M. song, a not yet released Vic Chesnutt song, and a Lee Dorsey song, among others. And the essays in the magazine made for great reading too.
Good episode of Austin City Limits this week. Jackie Venson gets 30 minutes & then a re-air of a Mavis performance from 2012.

Seriously folks, that Jackie Venson performance is out of this world good. Powerful and brilliantly executed. Record one of the re-airings later this coming week if you missed it tonight.
I know the whole Rock and Roll of Fame thing is polarizing for many, but I actually liked the way they handled the virtual induction this year. The HBO production was a nice watch IMO.

I loved that he would ask to sit in on local sets randomly, like a busker at the bar. or the familial jokes about him dissing my dad in the 80s, that were inevitably told before breaking into one of his songs. long live Jerry Jeff.

I knew of his bigger songs when I first arrived in Austin, but the first song I really connected with was 'Morning Song To Sally'. Nanci Griffith did an awesome cover on her "Other Voices | Other Rooms" album. And this live duet version remains a favorite:

Not sure how long this will remain up, but, if you wanted to watch the Go-Go's documentary released this Summer, but don't have Showtime, it is up on YouTube.

Watched it this afternoon, and really enjoyed it. I thought it was very cool that they had interview segments with all of the past members, including those outside of the prime era lineup. I do wish that they had covered a bit more of the post breakup years, but all rock docs tend to gloss over the later years.

Surprise - internally they're just as self-centered, petty and vile as any other band.

I've mentioned it before, but, just a quick reminder that the John Prine tribute episode that kicks off the new season of Austin City Limits premieres tomorrow. Check your local PBS station for airtimes.
Austin City Limits' new season is set to kickoff on Oct. 3 with an hour long “The Best of John Prine” retrospective episode. Due to the pandemic, this season appears to include a few other retrospective episodes, including one for SRV.
I've had very little in the way of good news this year, but, it appears that New Order's "Substance" is back on streaming services. It's a very small thing, but frankly, I'll take anything good at this point.
For those that still have cable, or access to Turner Classic Movies, it looks like they are running a bunch of music docs/concert films today, including Tom Waits' "Big Time", which I don't see airing on television very often. "Don't Look Back", "Neil Young: Heart of Gold" & others are also slated for today.
Tearing through the Kathy Valentine memoir, "All I Ever Wanted", which arrived in the mail yesterday. The short chapters make for steady progress. Haven't even gotten to her joining The Go-Go's yet, but it has been a fascinating read so far.
I started using a startup music sharing app a couple of months ago to help with music discovery. It's called musx. It's got some shortcomings, but, by and large, it has been pretty fun to play around with. And I've been introduced to some cool songs from it too.

Musx is good for someone like me that maybe isn't as on top of newer released tracks. I get a notification & a song shows up from someone with a brief description (140 character limit). I can sample it, and either save it or move on. The downside I've found are the constant notifications can get a bit much at times, so you may need to disable that functionality.

You're also pretty limited in your interaction. You can currently only provide a very brief, one time only comment back on any song you receive. That can be good or bad I guess. Limits the back and forth responses for sure. But, I've picked up some new songs, both new and old (but new to me) from it. It's new, so they will be making updates to improve things in the coming months.
I know half the record had already been released via pre-release singles, but the new Land of Talk album is quite good. More mellow than a lot of their early work, but still engaging.
