  • Looks like "No Direction Home" is back on Netflix. Terrific Dylan doc that Scorsese did back in the mid-2000's. But it also serves as a really good overview of American folk music forms from the 50s & 60s. It is long (3.5 hours) & originally aired in 2 parts on PBS.

@duke86fan I think it just rotated off at some point. Actually, I'm only assuming that it was on there at some point since Netflix has featured a lot of the Ken Burns docs & other PBS American Masters docs. Plus, they seem to feature many of Scorsese's films too. I think they had success with last year's Rolling Thunder Revue film, so maybe they decided to bring this back.

As with most things Dylan, it isn't a straightforward telling, but it is a fascinating one. And it is probably the truest take on Dylan as we are likely to get in film form. He doesn't completely drop his veil, but for once we don't get super cryptic Dylan soundbites.

The status inspired me to pull out the dvd. I’m watching part 1 now and will probably watch part 2 later in the week. It really an exceptional documentary.

Whitney Rose's new record, "We Still Go To Rodeos", is out today, and it is a really good listen.
Austin City Limits is re-broadcasting John Prine's final ACL performance from 2018 later this evening. Check your local PBS listings for airtimes if you need something to watch later.
Really glad I saw all of those live shows last year.

Realizing that the Jason Isbell show I had tickets for in August is probably not going to happen, and that I'm going to be hosed on any kind of reimbursement because...Ticketmaster. Was taking my mom and dad because it was timed around my mom's birthday. Luckily, I had really shut down the shows prior to all of this because I already knew I was losing my job.

Definitely were some shows last year I skipped out on because I wasn't feeling it. Having regret about that now.

I worry about all the local musicians in my town, and in everybody else's towns. I know pretty much all local musicians have to have second jobs just to make ends meet. Most have probably lost both of those sources of income at this point. How many are going to still be making music if we don't get an all clear on gatherings for shows until 2021?
In full on Band mode after reading "Testimony", and watching "Once Were Brothers".

I was pretty familiar with the general story arc of the Band, but there were some details in the book that shed some light on some things I'd always wondered about. It gives a lot of insight into the relationship between Dylan and the members of the Band. How they got into Bob's orbit, their reaction to entering Bob's world, and their working routine at Big Pink. Interesting stuff.
Finally watched "Parasite" last night. It wasn't at all what I was expecting, but I absolutely loved it.

I think I thought it was going to be more along the lines of "The Host". More of a horror movie than a thriller. Still, it was a really entertaining and original film.

My 78 year old mother in law loved it, she said it was funnier than she expected.

I saw it with my parents when I went home for a few days for Christmas last year. They both loved it and thought it was funnier than expected too. My mom said she watched it again recently and it was way more disturbing to her this time around haha.
Starting a regular (daily?) series of playlists that I'll be posting in the Mixtape Madness thread. I usually spend forever compiling playlists, but these will be capped at 12 songs each, and will be curated pretty quickly. Whatever bubbles to the top of my mind first. Just something to help pass the time.
Made a Frank Black solo/Frank Black & The Catholics favorites playlist earlier today. I've determined that those solo & Catholics records were perfectly built for favorites comps/playlists. Most of those albums, particularly the Catholics records, are just alright, but each has 3-4 songs that are top notch.
It only took me 3 hours to apply for unemployment here in Texas. No snark at all, I feel pretty lucky. There are people that have literally been trying to get it done for a week.

@RonDMC I was totally serious when I said I felt lucky. Hearing a lot of horror stories like yours. What number are you calling? The site kept crashing on me, so I did have to call. People seem to be having luck dialing 866-274-1722, and then getting re-routed. That's what I did. I got someone on the second try dialing that number.

Oh no I totally feel you! I have been calling the number from the site along with another number my company resource gave me. That number you mentioned is different so I’ll give that a try! I appreciate the help, fingers crossed!

Good luck! I found that number in a comment on their Facebook page. I tried a local number, and that went nowhere fast.
AXS TV is airing a documentary called "Festival Express" right now. I have it on in the background while I'm "working". How in the world did I not know about this doc or this whole Festival Express event in 1970? Major music blind spot for me until now.

Yeah, I don't mean what the Last Waltz ended up being specifically (I love it and watch it a couple times a year), moreso that it was obvious that the other guys didn't want the Band to end at that time.

I figured that's what you were getting at. I've always seen Robbie as more ambitious than evil. Maybe he didn't think they could re-capture what they had earlier on & wanted to move on. Again, if he messed around with the songwriting credits & screwed the other guys financially, that gets closer to evil. At the very least, it was a cold-blooded move that could have sent some of the guys down a worse path.

I agree with that entirely! I'm sure there's a lot of truth to Robbie's thinking that it was becoming dysfunctional toward the end, and I'm positive their best work was behind them anyway. The human impact was very unfortunate, though, that's all.
