Pink Floyd Appreciation

So after a very busy day jet washing time to reactivate this Floyd thread ..

So sunny day has to bring a bit of Atom Heart Mother.. brought this vinyl copy in 1989 from the long gone plastic factory in Birmingham ..

And it took a good thirty years to grow on me.. the title track is great..the various versions on the early years box set have helped me approach it with fresh ears..and I really like the first three tracks on side 2 now..AB0475FA-CE0B-46A2-A7E6-D5E070BA8CD4.jpegBBF10661-A66D-46F9-A4DF-60F8DECEEEB7.jpeg

Some info on the audio part of the next box set from SH forums FYI

ALL AUDIO

A MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON
Remixed stereo & surround.

DELICATE SOUND OF THUNDER Remixed stereo with pretty much all extras previously mentioned.

VENICE and KNEBWORTH 90.

DIVISION BELL and THE ENDLESS RIVER feature previous stereo and 5.1 mixes.

Plus outtakes & extras most of which are from the Division Bell era (no surprises there since that's where TER tracks originate from). More TBS outtakes (but probably not in it's entirety), some singles and b-sides, jams and more surprises!

And here’s some of the video details , again, from SH Forum

DELICATE SOUND OF THUNDER - VIDEO (1988)
Transferred from the original 35mm film negative to 4k. Looks amazing! Remixed in stereo & surround. Includes tracks not previously included but as extras, not part of the main feature. Not every song they played will be included, some were not filmed. Don't expect to see Welcome to the Machine. Po Powell is coordinating this one.

LIVE IN VENICE - VIDEO (1989)
Remastered in stereo only. The image will be an upgrade from the broadcast but don't expect too much of a quality jump. Also bumped up from SD.

LIVE AT KNEBWORTH - VIDEO (1990)
New edit but don't expect a significant amount of change. Up-rez'd from SD and should look better than the previous Blu-ray release. Remixed in stereo and surround. Gavin Elder, who directed Pompeii, was in charge of this one.

Anyone here dig the various Trance Mixes of Pink Floyd? I copied a few from a buddy in the 90s = some are better than others.

I really believe it’s the best studio album ever created.

Meddle is my favorite Floyd record though.
My favorite PF record has fluctuated as time has passed. First it was DSotM. If I’m being honest, it is one of the finest pieces of recorded music ever made. To this day I play air guitar and drums to the guitar solo and the opening section in Time, and the sheer emotion in Brain Damage/Eclipse still gives me chills.

Soon after it evolved to WYWH. I loved the long opening to Shine On, the weird keyboards of Machine, the straightforward Cigar, lovely title track, and how the closing Shine On brings it around full circle. Lately, I find the second Shine On noodles on too long after the vocals are done, but otherwise I still dig it.

Then next it was The Wall. I liked the concept behind it, and how the music helps tell the story along with the lyrics. Their later work I find meh...though I’ve recently discovered Division Bell, and really enjoy it, way more than I ever expected, especially after Momentary Lapse of Music, er, Reason.

Much time has passed, and I’ve owned every PF album. I never really got into their psychedelic phase. I see the significance of Piper (Interstellar Overdrive is incredible), but otherwise, to me, this period has always sounded dated. Meddle is.....odd. A bit schizophrenic, but I love Fearless and Echoes.

As I’ve lived with PF’s music for now 40 years, the record I return to the most often is Animals. Gilmour’s guitar work from front to back is astounding.

what sticks out to me on here is the arnold layne from the 2007 syd tribute. as far as i know, that has not been heard and is the last time the three of them played together.

what also sticks out is how heavy this is front-loaded on 87-90 material, and how much might have been left off. an early 87 tour echoes performance, the atlanta 87 shows, la carrera panamerica, the big spliff, demos, etc.... seems a lot more could have been used here instead of duplicating content on br and dvd discs. i'm eager for a less 80s sounding amlor mix, though- to me it's the only record in their entire catalog that sounds dated. even the early stuff @Sonicpharmacist feels sounds dated i just don't see. amlor, though, definitely sounds like it's a product of the 80s.

You going to cough up for this box @Gavaxeman ? Strange to jump to the later and leave out the glory days or do they think the immersion boxes counted for that.

Not at £429...just not enough “new” stuff to justify that price tag ... 5 CDs , 5 blu rays (ignore the DVD’s as they are duplicates of the Blu-rays) , max price should be £150 imo ... I’ll get the highlights set and then wait for a deal on the box set ..the early years dropped from £400 to £200ish after Xmas

Just popped into say, as cliché as it may be, Dark Side Of The Moon is my all time favorite record.

I've tried, but I can't deny it either. I bought it on vinyl on a complete whim a couple of weeks ago simply because I didn't have it yet but it's probably the only true 'must have' album in my mind.

I try not to overlisten to albums like that so I think it had been about a year since I'd heard it, laying on the floor in the dark it definitely did not disappoint, and it never will.
