Father's Day - What would your father choose to listen to?

The Traveling Wilburys - The Traveling Wilburys, Vol. 1

A staple in the genre of “Dad Rock,” how could my dad not think this was the greatest album of the 1980s when five of his favorite artists were involved? This was released when vinyl was getting replaced by CDs and we were in the cassette era to slowly transition to more expensive equipment. This was frustrating to my dad as he searched to get this on vinyl but eventually settled for the tape. Probably for the best, since it was much easier to play on road trips and on a boombox at the lake. I smell sunscreen when I play this record and it makes me equally happy and sad these days.

Day 20. Father’s Day.

since I have literally hundreds of records my dad would want to listen to today I asked him what I should spin in his honor. He replied with Physical Graffiti. I chuckled because when I originally saw the topic for today I said, I’ll spin some Zeppelin. Dad always says play Zeppelin. And sure enough…. So happy Father’s Day to my pops

I remember buying this on vinyl when it came out...

June 20 - Father's Day - What would your father choose to listen to?

St Vincent "Daddy's Home" (2021 Loma Vista)

My father would choose to listen to Elvis. But I played my Elvis record last month.

I'm going to stretch the theme and play a "Father-themed" record and I think this fits. Gives me a reason to spin St. Vincent's latest again. I actually wanted to like this album a lot more than I did upon my previous listens. I liked several of the early singles. I like the idea of a 70's inspired record. The vinyl is mastered by Chris Bellman and pressed at Pallas. But my listens feel "tiring" sonically. I can't really pinpoint what's going on (I know some will say Antonoff, but I don't know). I was expecting a lush, expensive-sounding 70's style production but I don't feel the instrument separation that's characteristic of the period. But standout track for me is "My Baby Wants A Baby".

Summer Solstice / Father's Day

Sun Ra - Interplanetary Melodies

Summer and winter solstice are a big deal for my wife and I, so it was the obvious holiday pick for today with the previously unissued Cosmic Rays rehearsal of "Summertime" found in this collection. Their 7" version of "Daddy's Gonna Tell You No Lie" being included too gives that sweet Father's Day bonus to today's pick!

Day 22 - National Onion Ring Day - If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it 💍🧅

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - Greatest Hits

The Onion Song: "The world is just a great big onion
And I don't care, it's the face people like to wear
And the only way to get rid of this great big onion
Every single soul's got to do their share"
